Sleep question - 3 month old

My 3, nearly 4 month old has always been a difficult sleeper. He contact naps during the day and was contact napping at night but we seemed to have managed to get him to lay down for the night-time sleeps - some nights it's all night, other nights it's part of the night by co-sleeping. Less than ideal but it's working for now. We plan to try and transition him to his cot soon.

The past few days he has been trying to roll and now pushes himself (propels himself via kicking his legs) to sleep in a side position. Is it safe for me to leave him like that? I know side sleep is not recommended at this age. I have been trying to move him back and he either wakes or moves himself back in to that position minutes later.

My 8 month old used to do that at around that age. The health visitor told me if he gets himself into that position it's fine to leave him

General rule is if they get themselves onto their side / front it's fine to leave them that way.

Wonderful, thank you @Cluelessfirstimer and @Twizbe . I can sleep without one eye open tonight!
