I'm not a regular poster more occasional but there seems to be a spate of unexpected pregnancies on mumsnet at the moment and I think I may have joined them.

DH and I had a good month in January - got on well etc which led to doing the deed 4 days in row probably when I was ovulating. Each time we used a condom but no spermicide - now period is 5-6 days late and I'm worried. How likely is it that I could be pregnant when using just condoms? Know I should do a test but can't bring myself to do it just yet. Already have DD nearly 4 and DS 19mths.

any symptoms? (apart from late period obviously!)

meemar · 06/02/2008 21:53

It is possible. I think condoms have a 5% failure rate or something.

Theres only one thing to do...

Hope you get the result you want x

feel a bit sick and have put on a bit of weight over last couple of weeks.... I wil test on Fri if no sign of period.

sounds quite likely then!

do you want to be pregnant?

Boredveryverybored · 06/02/2008 22:07

I got pregnant while using condoms, never had a split or anything that we noticed. So is definitely possible!

bojangles · 06/02/2008 22:14

Baby no 3 is something we have talked about in future but not really ready to take the plunge to TTC so would be nice suprise on one hand. However, on the other hand I have just gone back to work, love my job and have glimpses of getting my life back...

boredvv....that is what i suspected but until now always thought there was an element of human error involved!

I think people do expect you to have done something wrong to get pregnant while using contraception. But nothing is 100% is it, someone has to be that small percentage!

carmenelectra · 06/02/2008 22:17

This always worries/intrigues me about condoms, how likely they are to fail! We use them (never used spermicide) and i have never had one tear/come off, but i do wonder how many people get pregnant without realising it has split etc?!

bojangles · 06/02/2008 22:20

the reliability data that I could find seemed quite confusing. If they have a 5% failure rate does that include tears etc?

OP posts:
Boredveryverybored · 06/02/2008 22:25

I'm not sure actually? I always thought that if the condom split/came off etc it would be easily noticed. We definitely never had anything like that, so I'm still completely unsure as to exactly how dd ever came into existance! lol

MrsArchieTheInventor · 06/02/2008 22:26

The only 100% fail-safe method of contraception is not having sex in the first place.

Me - became pregnant whilst using the Mirena coil.

Woman in the bed opposite to me in the labour ward - became pregnant despite using a condom and taking the morning after pill.

Woman in the bed next to me in the labour ward - tried for 2 years to become pregnant and succeeded after several rounds of IVF.

Sometimes life just works out that way.

Hope you get the result you want!

bojangles · 06/02/2008 22:33

MrsArchie - your labour ward sounds interesting!

Will report back with either test result or to confirm arrival of period. Now I will put it all out of mind so I can have undisturbed sleep - unlikely to happen!

Only ever got PG when I mucked up my pill - was on it for 10 years before that.

Now using condoms and you've got me worried - I DONT want another baby.

Good luck

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/02/2008 07:27

Um. Congratulations?

Expect we'll see you on 'due in Oct' in a few days!

belgo · 07/02/2008 07:48

if used correctly then condoms have a failure rate of about 2% - which means two percent of women will become pregnant in a year.

do you know either why yet bojangles?

Chopster · 07/02/2008 08:20

good luck bojangles.

I got pg with the dts while using the cap. Bloody useless thing.

meebles · 07/02/2008 08:32

sperm are sneaky buggers! We were using condoms too when I became pregnant with my DD. A bit worried in case it happens again!

hecate · 07/02/2008 08:34

Me. Ds2. Pill.

carmenelectra · 07/02/2008 10:43

OH Im a bit worried about these stories of getting preg whilst using condoms without them obviously splitting or falling off! I always thought it would be quite obvious! I can understand pill accidents or the coil, but if a condom doesnt fall off or split i wouldnt, no way, expect to get pregnant!

Better start using two

Chaotica · 07/02/2008 10:51

Got pg with DS while on mini-pill... (too mini in my case it seems)

Congratulations (perhaps)

flamingtoaster · 07/02/2008 10:58

I have a friend whose claim to fame is that all her children were conceived when using various forms of contraception.

peanutbear · 07/02/2008 11:06

I was on the pill took it every day with the proper breaks religiously at the same time every morning

I got pregnant the hormone in the pill masked the HCG and I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer!!! that happened to grow into a baby

saying that I though condoms were the safest method of contraception so if your pregnant DH is in for the snip pronto I thought these were virtually failsafe if they didnt tear

seasidemama · 07/02/2008 13:38

Me. Pregnant on the injection. Heaven only knows how.

MascaraOHara · 07/02/2008 13:40

I got pregnant on the pill

bojangles · 07/02/2008 19:36

Thanks for all your responses - not a very good thread for showing the success of contraception!

Well, still no period but was seeing nurse today for other things and she did a pg test for me and BFN!

So am presuming period is on way and not pregnant but will review on saturday if period doesn't arrive.

She also gave me a prespription for the pill!
