So toddler is feeling under the weather since yesterday coughing and runny nose today he’s had a temp of 38.5 I have given him nurofen after that it has come to 38.

he recently just got I’ll with very bad fever and coughing and trips to AE so I am just worried it’s not that again.

Call 111

HappyHolidays22 · 20/01/2023 21:25

Sending hugs! I also have a poorly 7 month old with fever at the minute and I know the anxiety! I hate it when they’re ill! And it is impossible to know if it’s just a ‘mild’ virus or something that’s going to develop and get worse.

My thinking is that so long as the temperature is coming down after medicine and they are taking in fluids, then we are doing ok. If it goes on for coming up for a week or the temp doesn’t come down, I start to get a bit nervous and take them to be checked.

but I would also say you should trust your gut. If you feel something isn’t right, take them to be checked right away or call 111.

hope this improve for you soon xxx

the fever anxiety is real it’s just so worrying 😩 his temp has come to 38.0 after having nurofen so hopefully it keeps going down. I spoke to 111 and they said clinician will call back x
hope your little one gets better soon too!

He literally just had the worst virus over Christmas and he’s I’ll again I don’t even take him out because of this 😩😩

Gosh I feel you!!! We were the same in December too and I only said to my mum today that I just wish that I’d had a few more weeks between nasty viruses! I also second guess whether we should go to places because of this too!!! But I do have a 5 year old DD who is at school and she’s bringing in all the germs in the world… so I have to remind myself that I can’t live tucked away from everything.

The thing I keep telling myself is that everything they get now makes them stronger and there will come a point where the colds and viruses stop being quite so impactful. For example, my DD can get the same virus as my 7 month old and be over it in 2 days whereas it’ll take my son more than a week….

hang on in there! It will get better for us (although I think the fever anxiety will remain forever!)

HappyHolidays22 · 20/01/2023 21:42

Hope your little one improves quickly! Just keep on top of alternating calpol and nurofen as much as you can to keep the fever down :)

i know right it’s unreal! I only have one son who’s 2 and a half he doesn’t even go out and no one to bring the viruses home and yet he gets ill somehow 😩😩
He had a nasty virus over Christmas temp over 40 wouldn’t come down eventually he was on antibiotics and then after that so lethargic for a week. He just about recovered and now this.
and not being able to go anywhere also is just depressing in this weather.
went to my friends house after 3 months 2-3 days ago and he’s ill again.
thank you hope your little one gets better too and we get over this winter and into summer and sunshine 🙈🙈

Hugs! I’m glad I’m not alone - I think we are feeling the same! I feel guilty too because I have a friend who is on mat leave the same time as me - she’s taking her DS to all sorts of soft plays and clubs… but I’ve only been once because I just can’t face illnesses from something like soft play (that a 7 month old defo gets only limited enjoyment out of!)

roll on spring! Lots of love to you and your DS. Let us know how he is tomorrow if it helps to relieve some anxiety! I love MN for the comfort being able to comment/vent at any time of the day or night! xxx

If he's not going out he's not building any immunity so the slightest thing is going to hit him hard surely he hasn't been in for 3 months? Has he an underlying condition?

NishaaS123 · 20/01/2023 23:34

@jannier
he hasn’t been in all the time but I have avoided taking him to crowded areas soft plays etc. he does go to his grand moms house and Tesco in his pram lol

I've got 3 dc 8,6 and 1. In my experience a cold and a temp i give 3 days to get better (with paracetamol/ibuprofen, unless they appear very sick, breathing issues like wheezing or rash etc. If longer than 3 days id see dr. My dr has said for babies theyd rather see and make sure.

NishaaS123 · 21/01/2023 01:53

My DS is 2 and a half he was playing and generally bieng himself just a bit irritated. His temp was 37 before sleeping. It’s not gone back to 38.5 while he’s sleeping so I have given him paracetamol I am hoping the fever goes away soon. It’s just stressful😩

Your child has only gone to his nans and to Tesco in a pram???
Why?
Your child needs a life, needs to catch bugs, needs to learn to play with other children

Justbecause19 · 21/01/2023 02:35

Sounds like one of the many viruses doing the rounds. I find keeping on top of medication when they have a fever is essential, alternating calpol and nurofen. If that keeps it at a safe level then I keep at home. My 10 month old had similar yesterday, very runny nose, fever of 38.5 but was much better today. It's scary as parents but we also need to apply a little sense and logic with the was A&E and ooh is right now.

NishaaS123 · 21/01/2023 09:08

@PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet

my child went out a lot in the summer and enjoyed himself. I am not going to be taking him to soft play and placed where I know he most definitely will catch a bug. If I can avoid these places for a few months until the weather gets better I rather do that.
he still has a life plays with me and my husband enjoys himself a lot at his nans house.

@Justbecause19
I have been doing that with him all night and has managed to keep the temp down. I hate taking him to the AE but as I said the last time had a horrible fever which wouldn’t go away so fever now just gives me anxiety 😩

PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 21/01/2023 09:36

Theres lots of places other than softplay
How about the park?
and other outdoor places?
He was out in the ‘summer’ but his so young and life has been tough with covid but this isnt the way to avoid him getting ill…
Your keeping your child at home but he is still getting sicking anyway.
Even ‘when the weather is warmer’
There are still loads of bugs at softplay

Does he not walk? At 30 months prams are more when tiered not that Tesco's is anything for him he's never going to build immunity if you keep him in isolation your just putting off the inevitable at 3 he could be in school nursery so September if he's not going places school is going to be very challenging has he experience of playing with children turn taking and sharing all vital skills to be with other children.
