Fluconazole whilst breastfeeding?

So unfortunately me and baby have both developed thrush after I was on a course of antibiotics, nipples for me and oral thrush on baby. It makes breast feeding so painful!! I’ve been prescribed Daktarin cream for nipples and Fluconazole 150mg to take for a week and baby Nystan to take four times a day after feeds. I haven’t started taking the Fluconazole as the out of hours clinician told me not to whilst breastfeeding, however I’ve had two health visitors tell me that I absolutely can breast feed whilst on it. I’m so not sure what to do as if I take a break from breast feeding and feed baby formula what if she won’t be able to go back on the breast after, she is still so young just 3 weeks and a half. Anyone know if I can take Fluconazole whilst breastfeeding and anyone else experience nipple thrush and baby oral thrush before?

Its absolutely fine!
Some Drs lack training around drugs in breastmilk, but Fluconazole is a standard treatment during breastfeeding.

Take the tablets, it’s the recommended treatment.

If I didn’t take it then I would probably still have nipple thrush now 😂

It took 2 weeks of Fluconazole tablets every day to shift it for me.

@RockCrushesLizard thank you, I’m just so nervous with the different opinions I get told!

@PinkPlantCase thank you for your reply, was your baby prescribed anything for oral thrush at the same time?

I was prescribed the exact same thing for thrush when breastfeeding & DS prescribed the same.

Cleared it up pretty quickly and never got it again.

I took it when breastfeeding too.

Just to add the breastfeeding network has an email address and if you can't find a drug on their factsheet section you can email and a specialist pharmacist will tell you if you can or cannot take that drug whilst nursing.

@WombatBombat thank you for your message. Did you carry on taking Fluconazole whilst breast feeding? And did the Nystan help clear baby oral thrush?

@Flittingaboutagain thank you. Did you find it was okay to take whilst breastfeeding? Also how long did it take for symptoms for you to clear?

My baby was older than yours when we had it so he could have the daktarin oral gel. I found his cleared up in around a week, but the cream wasn’t enough to shift it for me. But tbf it bet has been. If I have vaginal thrush I always need a tablet or a pessary.

We carried on using the the oral gel twice a day on my DS until I was sure that the thrush has gone from me.

Yes & yes.

Full course was needed and he had awful nappy rash from it, so we also needed metanium to sort that before it really cleared up quickly.
