When to seek medical advice re eating and weight gain

My son will be 3 in Feb and weighs approx 12.8kg, which is above his 10th centile birth weight but below the 50th centile he was averaging over the last 2 years or so.

I have not measured his height and I know they’re measured together to create an idea of growth, but I would say he is the same height as most others his age!

Anyway, he is a terrible eater. He is definitely a stacker, but I’m reluctant to stop this now as he barely eats meals. I have tried giving less snacks but he is still the same for the most part.

Today all he has eaten is a few gulps of a home made strawberry and banana smoothie, a square or chocolate, and a quarter of a ham sandwich. I’ve just given him his dinner and he shouted at me to take it away, he doesn’t even want it near him!

He is very active and ok in all other aspects but I’m worried that his poor eating is going to cause harm!

It’s not this bad every day, but he never, ever finishes a meal when he does entertain it. I’ve noticed that he doesn’t even finish firm favourites like pizza or pasta anymore.

I am sure if I gave him a bag of sweets or choc he’d demolish it though.

Ideas?

He sounds pretty normal to me, especially if his weight is on a higher centile than his birth centile and he's tracking it.

If you're worried at all though, could you take him to the next weigh-in clinic, take your Red Book and get them to plot his weight and height, just so that you can check the centiles?

@PritiPatelsMaker thanks for the reply.

Is that still possible age 3? We haven’t seen a health visitor in person since he was a few weeks old and that’s when he was last weighed by them too.

I think he sounds fine. My two year old won’t eat meals either. Just wants to snack all day.

Yeah I would occasionally get DC1 weighed at that age when I got DC2 weighed, just because he wanted to feel part of it.

You could always make it into a fun game and plot it at home but honestly, he sounds fine Wink

Did you not get a 1 year review? I thought that was standard?

@Cluelessfirstimer we got a video call at 18 months if I recall correctly
