Put a dvd on for dc last night. Columbia lady holding torch appears. "oooo she looks like you, Mummy!" says dd "but much thinner." Ouch!

Agonised all evening to dh. He laughed & reminded me they'd changed the Columbia lady recently - slimmed her down a bit to please the current skinny trend. Is he having me on?

WTF is columbia?

nervousal · 05/02/2008 09:51

I decided to take DD for fish and chips. I said to her "we shouldn't really be having these" "Why not Mummy?" "because too many make you fat"...(pause) "What like you??" "ehmmmm yes I suppose so - like me" (longer pause.......) "Mummy???" "Yes pet?"..... "Do you HAVE any bones?".....

cariboo · 05/02/2008 09:53

You know, Columbia Pictures has an image of a woman dressed in robes, holding up a torch. Like 20th Century Fox with its searchlights and trumpeting or Tristar with its galloping white horse. What planet do you live on, btw?

DD said to me yesterday, 'Muuuuuuuuum, is it normal to get stretch marks on your back as well as your belly?' me 'why?' 'cos you have and I just wanted to know it was ok'.

SnappyLaGore · 05/02/2008 09:59

"The logo's most recent overhaul was undertaken in 1993 when Sony Pictures Entertainment (which bought Columbia in 1989) commissioned illustrator Michael J. Deas to redesign the lady and return her to her "classic" look. The result, based on Deas' sessions with Mandeville, Louisiana homemaker Jenny Joseph who posed for him with a makeshift robe and torch, was a taller, slimmer Columbia Lady with lighter, curlier hair and a dimmer torch. Rather than use Joseph's face however, Deas constructed a composite face made up of several computer-generated features."

Thanks, LL! I do rather resemble the older version of the torch lady in more ways than one!

oh, here's another likely classic from dd, dating from 7:45 this morning as I was applying eyebrow pencil to her face (today's mardi gras & she went to school as a witch - how appropriate!):

"Mummy! The spider legs from your nose have gone!"

I guess she meant the black hairs in my nose which I never knew I had - yuck! What a drag it is getting old.

Oh Cariboo- but you do look like the columbia lady! (Who is very lovely I think btw)

JingleyJen · 05/02/2008 10:46

DS1 told his grandmother last weekend that she wouldn't fit down the slide because she is too fat!! this made my mum more determined than ever to get down the slide...
unfortunately DS1 was actually correct.

sourgrape · 05/02/2008 13:45

so what do you all make of it then that, the most common thing men do on stag nights is go to a lapdancing club?

Artichokes · 05/02/2008 13:51

My DD is only 17 months and can't talk properly yet. However, she can say a few choice phases such as "wobble, wobble, wobble" while shaking the flab on my tummy.
