5 month old, strong smelling uring

Hi everyone,
I noticed probably a week or so ago now that DD's urine smells a lot stronger than usual. As soon as she has done a wee I can smell it. To me, it smells really strong. On one occasion I thought she had done a dirty nappy, but it was just a really strong smelling wee.
I am going to take her to the doctor to just get it checked, but I just wondered if anyone else had any insight? DH doesn't think it smells any stronger than usual, but I never used to be able to smell her wee so strongly.
She is well in herself and still feeding etc. Only thing is she is teething really badly at the moment and drooling constantly, so I did initially put it down to that, though a quick look on Google says that strong smelling urine isn't a sign of teething?
Thank you for any insights 😊

My daughter has had this before and it just went away. She has been fine since and no issues. Would give it a few days. Also worth considering if it's dehydrated/concentrated urine? Or utI which can also cause smelly urine, you could always drop a call to GP and ask if they think you should send a urine sample in to check. However if no other symptoms and not cloudy urine it may not be UTI.

@rebekahnorris thank you 😊 I'm going to check with the GP for piece of mind, but DH is adamant it doesn't smell stronger so it may just be me🤦🏼‍♀️

is there any possibility of you being pregnant @Bubbles021? Heightened sense of smell was one of my first pregnancy symptoms.
ds also had much stronger smelling urine when he was unwell so it could be the teething too.

Millymollymine · 02/01/2023 20:52

Are you giving her any vitamins? My babies wee in the morning after having abidec was always really smelly.

Bubbles021 · 02/01/2023 20:54

@DuchessOfDisco no I definitely don't think it's pregnancy!
@Millymollymine no she's not having vitamins, she's combi fed breast and formula and that hasn't changed 🤦🏼‍♀️

One of my dc had strong, very very unusual smelling pee several times as a very young baby. I do know what pee smells like because I have handled hundreds if not thousands of assorted pee samples as a lab worker! Fobbed off by GP who said it was normal (without doing any tests or experiencing the smell herself) - she thought I was being a paranoid first time mum. Later, once or twice a UTI was diagnosed and treated.

Long story short, sometime later it was discovered that dc had serious kidney damage. The doctors denied it had anything to do with previous UTIs (but couldn’t prove it). I’ve always suspected that dc had undiagnosed UTIs when very little which could have caused the damage.

Please don’t be fobbed off - I got tired of HVs and GPs telling me all sorts of things were normal, when they clearly weren’t, just because I was a first time mum. Ask if it could be a UTI, and if they say no, ask how they can be so sure and press for tests.

Yes a very simple test can confirm it is.

@FictionalCharacter thank you so much for your reply! What was the smell like? My daughter's smells like urine, it's just stronger than it usually smells (not sure if that makes sense). Did your child's urine smell like strong urine or something else?
I am going to get an appointment tomorrow, but I really appreciate your help!

Long time ago so I can’t remember, but no it didn’t just smell strong, it smelled different, like some kind of chemical I couldn’t identify.
