My ds only says 3 words and he’s been saying them for weeks. When can I expect more words? Is it a slow and gradual process? He’s on the waiting list for salt

Has he been referred to audiology for a hearing test?

I really don’t think you should be worrying yet . Toddlers are all so different with their speech. My 2nd son said only one or two words until 2.5 and very few aged three . He then suddenly got going and is a very articulate adult .
Granddaughter 3 and has only recently started using full sentences .

What is his receptive language like? My last little one had 3 words at 2, every time a new word came an old word fell away so there were only ever 3 words he used. Just after 30 months he had a sudden leap and had 12 words then a week later he had more than 30. At 2 the SaLT was more concerned with his receptive language and his ability to communicate in non verbal ways so we used photos to help him ask for things he wanted or to tell him what was happening.

Only you know your child. But speaking personally, my DS was about 3 1/4 when he started speaking "properly". He knew lots of words and had good understanding, but couldn't pronounce them properly, so most people couldn't understand him. He's now 4 and speaking absolutely fine.

It can be very hard to predict. If he's already on the waiting list, have they given you an idea of how long the list is? Has he had a hearing test yet?

This was my daughter. She is now a very chatty, articulate 12 year old. She does have some processing issues at school (she is bright but works slowly) and I have wondered whether that is related to her delayed speech, but once she started talking, she didn't stop 😂
