Whinging/whining

Please can someone describe to me what a (roughly) eight month old's whinging typically sounds like? My LO has made the same noises as she's currently making (in excess) since she was only a couple of months old. Firstly I thought it was discomfort from reflux, then at one stage I wondered if it was vocal stimming, and now given she's in leap 6 I don't know whether to think it's just whinging and has been all along?

I don't have very many mum friend's or see very many other babies in a setting where they're whinging so I really have nothing to compare the sound to. And YouTube hasn't helped me find anything either.

Not sure if this helps or does my daughter’s whinge justice but she has made a very nasally ‘nnnnnnn’ sound when moaning or frustrated from a very early age. It would often turn raspy the more she did it. I’ve often wondered if it’s ‘normal’ as I haven’t heard other babies make such an irritating sound! She’s just turned nine months and it has suddenly transformed into a ‘mmmmm’ and today, we’ve had the beginnings of what I think is mama. I’m just thinking it’s one of her quirks!

@SLA2022 Yes! This sounds exactly like my LO, and like you I've never heard another baby making the same sort of sound. Does your daughter do it in her sleep at all?

My daughter did exactly this "nnnnnnn" noise constantly at about 7/8 months, I could never tell what she wanted or if she was even upset at all. She just eventually stopped 🤷‍♀️

@HelterSkelter224 This is reassuring, thank you! Did you also find it the most irritating sound in existence? I feel bad for saying that but honestly I am so exhausted by the end of every day from just constantly trying to ignore it and keep calm.

@bluebellaa She doesn’t really do it in her sleep. Occasionally when she is falling asleep or when waking up. It’s just mostly her entire wake time 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes I did! Especially as I just could not work out what she wanted. She was fed, changed, and napped. It eventually just stopped so I don't think she wanted anything she was just being a wee whinge 🤷‍♀️ it's ok to be frustrated sometimes you are human!

She's one now and currently lying in her cot (due her nap) shouting "AAAAAAAHHHH" at the top of her voice instead of sleeping so who knows 🤷‍♀️

My DS is 6 months and does that noise when he can't do something / can't reach something / wants something and I don't give it to him. He's done it in tummy time since he was about 2 months, but it's much more frequent now. He had a total paddy the other day because I didn't let him touch squeeze my relative's elderly cat.

Sometimes it signifies effort but it's mostly frustration. Or rage.

My DD used to whine / whinge constantly until she started babbling at around 7 months or so? I think? God I can’t even remember when now, but I do remember those whiny noises going right through me! So irritating 🤣

Yes actually right enough it was just before my daughter started babbling too.
