So DD1 discovered the moon at the start of this month...it's been a gorgeous discovery, looking out of the window a lot of nights pointing it out, getting excited, massively hooked on Moon baby on Cbeebies to... we've not seen it for 2 days, obviously as an adult I understand why... we spot it today in the park, a lovely slender slice of New moon... but once the excitement of spotting it back she gets upset that most of it's disappeared and asks "Where'd it gone?"... language is rapidly increasing but obviously explaining the moon phases is surely too much for her to understand?! Bless her! What shall I say next time if she gets upset again? I'm thinking of calling it a baby moon that's growing?!

We pretty much explain things as is and then they take from it what they will, e.g. something along the lines of 'the moon is going around the earth and as it goes round it looks different shapes', ok, they probably won't get it yet but they'll grasp different bits the more you talk about it.
