7.5 month old - refusing to eat/drink milk

Hello,

I’m after some advice…DD developed a cold/cough last Saturday, slightly raised temperature on and off. She has been refusing solids since then (previously 2 meals a day) and not overly keen on taking her usual amount of milk but was managing to get at least 50% into her (and water). Went to see the nurse Tues who said upper respiratory infection and manage at home with what I was doing but by Thursday she seemed no better and I was concerned. Dr said no chest infection but possibility of a slight ear infection (slightly red) and if she didn’t improve with calpol then to start on antibiotics. I thought we’d turned a corner as she was wanting more milk yesterday but come the evening she was back to refusing….it’s now been nearly 24 hours and all she has had is 2oz when she woke in the night, which I struggled to get into her.
She seems happy enough, smiling, rolling about but is more grizzly than usual and has about an hour in the night where she is inconsolable for no reason I can come up with.

She’s drinking water from the bottle so I don’t think it’s pain but I’m at a loss with what to do. She’s still having wet nappies as drinking water. 111 will send me to the urgent care centre and I’m not sure what they’ll do as she’s been checked out already.

Im worried about her calorie/fluid intake 😔

Poor baby: it's heartbreaking seeing them so miserable! Really good that she's drinking water though; she probably just needs to sleep it off. Keep offering milk and/or water while she's sick, and maybe some solids if she seems up for it. If she's no better in a few days then go back to the doctor.

The main thing is to give her lots of cuddles and liquids. Don't stress too much about food - people don't tend to want to eat when they're ill, never mind learning skills! She'll catch up when she's feeling better

It’s normal. She’s poorly.

I wouldn’t be too worried about her calorie intake but you must keep the fluids up - if she’s drinking plenty of water and wet nappies then that’s one less thing to worry about x
It certainly sounds like she may need an anti biotic so hopefully 111 will get back to you soon and you can get sorted x

Our DD didn't drink much when she had a double ear infection. Needed antibiotics. Needed to be held upright at night. Otherwise it hurt too much, pressure on ear drum higher when she was flat on the mattress.

How is she now @fejkalove?

fejkalove · 26/12/2022 09:27

Thank you for all your replies. I started the antibiotics on Xmas eve and it was a Christmas miracle as she woke yesterday and took almost her normal amount of milk. She’s still not interested in solid food but I’m much more relaxed now she’s taking the milk!

She must’ve been feeling rubbish even though she seemed happy 90% of the time.

Thank you all for your replies again. X
