Breastfeeding - weird nipple pain?

Nellie1027 · 21/12/2022 18:25

I have a 5 week old baby and I'm exclusively breastfeeding.

Recently my nipples have started to feel really weird when I'm not feeding. When they get cold they really hurt which can be really painful at times. Sometimes when I think, even momentarily, about feeding or my little one they go tingly and I can sense them leaking in my bra.

I'm assuming this is all normal and just another strange thing I have to get used to?!

Even sat here writing this I can feel them going all tingly and weird.

The tingly feeling is the let down response, which can happen quite a lot in the early weeks and is really annoying! It's a good sign though in a way as it means your body is making plenty of milk and is ready to give it to baby.

I'm not sure about the pain when it's cold. Could it just be that your nipples are super sensitive right now?

When I got pregnant with DC1, I noticed the same thing in the cold and it's never abated. It's Raynaud's of the nipple in my case, and it's miserably painful, but it's not at all uncommon. Just got to keep warm!

I had the very sensitive nipples thing a couple of weeks ago, hurt when I was out in the cold or if something rubbed against them. My baby is 8 weeks now and it's really calmed down. I still get the letdown feeling and it hurts when it's about time to feed him or he cries, totally normal, hopefully that'll ease up soon too

Both happened to me too, when not having enough layers for the cold painful sensation and tingling with let down. Second one finally reduced a lot recently (baby is 6 months), I'm glad, as I hate the wetness feeling when milk goes out on its own.

This could be vaspospasm. I had this and found switching the style of nursing bra I wore helped it stop.
