What activities do you do with your under 1’s?

I do the usual playing with her with her toys, reading (although she doesn’t sit still for long), dancing, singing etc.
Ive had a few friends mention (not in a bragging way) that they bake with their LOs, but I absolutely cannot fathom how that would work. Another also said they have been finger painting with their 15 month old and although my DD is currently only 10 months it just seems like that would be disastrous, with me trying desperately to keep her from eating paint!
Am I a lazy mum?

That sounds absolutely ridiculous, of course an under one is not baking. You are doing just fine with singing, dancing and including them in your everyday life. The competitive parenting never ceases to amaze me.

RockAndRollerskate · 20/12/2022 18:51

Haha what exactly is their under one doing with baking?
I can barely bring myself to do baking with a three year old because it’s such a shit show and painting is strictly for nursery!

With my 11mo I do lots of walking and make little obstacle courses for him to crawl over. He loves a wooden spoon and pan to play with too

Painting
swimming
sensory tubs (use the big plastic storage tubs)
playgroups, singing groups etc

Going ‘swimming’ during baby or family sessions at the local pool, they have toys and floats in the pool and it’s all v relaxed. Both mine loved going to those sessions. Just get yourself a bit organised for when you get out the pool thou!

Feeding ducks.

Just everyday stuff at that age is fine.

MolliciousIntent · 20/12/2022 19:06

I do do a lot of cooking "with" my 10m old - as in I put her in her highchair next to me, talk to her about what I'm doing and give her bits of food to try... She loves it.

MolliciousIntent · 20/12/2022 19:07

We also did "finger painting" at that age, but I didn't use paint, I mixed food colouring in with natural yoghurt so it didn't matter if she ate it.

LT2 · 20/12/2022 19:13

I definitely wouldn't bake or finger paint with my 11 month old yet! We do much the same as you. And a bit of screen time 🤫

Dove88 · 20/12/2022 19:15

Oohh I love the obstacle course idea! And the ‘painting’ with yoghurt!

To be honest, swimming is something I really want to do with her but I’ve put so much weight on since having her that I’m so self conscious I can’t bare the thought of it

We did lots of messy play, dyed spaghetti or rice. Sensory toys are great along with foil blankets and a disco light.

Painting the bath is a great one, throw them in with just a nappy on and let them go wild!

Please don't be self conscious. Plenty of bigger people go swimming and if you have a baby with you everyone will be looking at her, not you.

bakewellbride · 20/12/2022 19:42

@MolliciousIntent that's such a great idea!

catsnore · 20/12/2022 19:47

My 11 month old plays with envelopes, plastic containers and empties things out the recycling while I desperately try to achieve things 😂😂

Hooveslikejagger · 20/12/2022 21:36

@Dove88 please don’t let your self conscious stop you from trying swimming, honestly there are all shapes and sizes at the pool. No one will bat an eye lid, as someone else said, people will be looking at the cute baby, not you.

Sandbox is one I used to do with my DD, but I used to blend up Cheerios instead of using real sand as everything went in the mouth but was a lot of fun for her.
