Ds has suddenly got a really painful sore throat. Is it likely to be strep a/scarlet fever?

How did it start for other people's children and what else should I be looking out for ?

Worrying as I have an 11 week old who I won't know if she has a sore Throat and currently away ! How soon would ds need antibiotics ?

Hi OP sorry to hear LO is poorly I attach a guide I've been using so you can check for other signs. I hope LO feels better soon.

@mommybear1 thank you!

Is it always strep that causes a sore throat?

No, it’s not always strep that causes a sore throat.

Sorry OP, I really don’t mean to sound patronising as I know you’re probably just panicking right now, but you must know there are thousands of different viruses which would also present with sore throat as a symptom?

Yeah I've had a look can't see no spots or anything.

Yeah I guess I know it's not just strep but constantly seeing on the news how there is loads of cases of it etc so it makes you panic! I do have anxiety too around my children especially so that plays a part.
He was crying this morning as it was hurting so much

Alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen and give him warm blackcurrant squash.

KangarooKenny · 18/12/2022 08:21

And keep an eye on his temp, but try not to worry.
My DS was complaining of a sore throat and cough, turns out he’s got bronchitis. Not everything is strep, and strep has always been around. My oldest has it when she was about 3.
