Guidance needed on Potty training a 20 month old boy

He's my third child, but first boy! To be blunt I wasn't expecting him to potty train for at least another year if not another 18 months but he's demanding to have his nappy changed every single time he's done even a tiny wee. I thought (obviously misguidedly)that boys always took longer before they were ready to potty train) He knows he's doing them. So how do you potty train boys that aren't really even talking yet!

Get a squishy seat for the toilet.

Buy some absorbent pants. I took my DS shopping and he chose them himself.

Put him in pants (no trousers helps) and ask him if he needs to do a wee every 90 mins or so. Also first thing in the morning, before nap, after nap, before going out anywhere and before bath and bed.

Rush to the loo and make a big fuss when he wees on the toilet.

Don't make a big deal if he has an accident.

ds doesn't do choosing lol. if i said to him which pants do you want he would stare at me blankly.

OverRated · 04/02/2008 00:35

So pick them for him!

My DS couldn't decide.

Me: Which pants would you like?
DS: Um. Dese ones. And dese ones.
Me: Well, we can have 1 pack. Would you like these. OR these?
DS: Yes. Dese. AND Dese.
Me: But we're not getting both. Either this pack. OR that pack.
DS: Yes. Dese. AND dese.

Sigh.

I gave in and bought 2 packs. But it seems you can never have too many pants!

i just meant a lot of people say to take them to get their pants cos it is exciting and encourages them. but ds wouldn't even have a clue what we were buying lol. i think he's too young yet but will watch out for some good ideas.

read "potty" books with him, have a potty time game or toy he likes. If he has a pattern to his wee/ poo times work with it. Will he learn a potty gesture even if hes not talking. something like patting his bum maybe.

ds1 is 20 months, we're training him, been doing it for about a week, I just bought the pants for him (he wasn't even with me at the time) but he loves wearing them.
The absorbant pants are no good for him as he has cloth nappies and they feel like nappies.
He doesn't talk but has done baby signing so we have a potty sign or to he honest he grabs his willy when he needs to go!
Overrated has pretty much said how we did it! loads of fuss when wee or poo on potty(remembering that this is before the terrible two's so they just want to please and a round of applause works so well!)
