What can I do differently?

Scenario this evening:

Almost 3 year old DS hasn't done a poo all day. Was then farting (sorry if TMI) so put him on the toilet to try and do a poo.
He's been doing wees on the toilet for 6 months now and is yet to do a poo.

Sat on the toilet, nothing.

He then came into the kitchen 10 minutes later, walking strangely - as if he had done a poo in his boxers. No sign of it, but figured it must be on its way so put him again on the toilet.

He was farting and it was obvious he needed to poo. He even let the tiniest little fart out and it followed through with a teeny trickle of poo. But we had tears, and he said he couldn't do it.
Waited with him on the toilet for over 30 minutes before I felt terribly bad and took him off the toilet.

Put a pull up on him when he got off and within 5 minutes, he's poo'd.

What can I do? Feeling really deflated at the minute.

Feed him foods that help the process

Things that worked for us:

  • naked time at home for a few days without going out
  • no pull ups/ nappies - dealt with poo in pants when it happened
  • trying to make time on potty fun and relaxed with bubbles, toys, books etc
  • reward when poo on potty

I put my son on and he was mucking around for ages playing and not doing anything. I said "I'll take you off if you're not going to poop."
I counted from five to 0 and I think he thought I was going to take him off but when I got to 0 I said "push!" And he did and the poo came out.
I then did a big funny dance for him to make him laugh.
So that was how I got him to do first poo on toilet.he is a nightmare though as he witholds

Leave it a tiny bit longer!

Why make him suffer like that for the sake of a month or two?

We all worry but it will happen.
