So it has finally reached my dd school as I knew it would. At what stage do I call the doctor, dd has a sore throat and headache but they are her only symptoms. Bearing in mind I can't get a GP appointment as they are fully booked, should I just wait and see ?

My son was has been ill for two weeks. Very high temperature, bright pink cheeks, and very sore throat. He lost his voice too and was dizzy when on his feet. I watched and gave him calpol/brufen. His temp went on day 5 but i called the GP on day 8 as he had a chesty cough and spiked a temp again. So they prescribed antibiotics over the phone- there is a national shortage of liquid so my son has capsules. He is definitely getting better.

You know your own child so if you see a decline in her presentation then call the GP

Whathefisgoingon · 09/12/2022 19:23

I would insist on being seen straight away.

How? If you can't get a gp appointment.

My daughter has scarlet fever, my Dr surgery was fully booked so called 111. On hold for an hour, then got through and Dr called me within the hour and prescribed antibiotics. Really good service tbh. Only problem then was searching for a pharmacy with antibiotics available but managed to find some.

Mummyme87 · 09/12/2022 19:56

Call 111 if you can’t get GP. Scarlett fever symptoms are headache, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, temperature; the rash comes after I believe.

Searchingforsunshine · 09/12/2022 19:57

Scarlet fever you need to watch the tongue, its white then it goes and bright red strawberry like tongue. Also my daughter had bad breath but thats not in all cases I don't think

amiold · 09/12/2022 19:59

Slightly different as I'm not a child (31 f)

I started with a sore throat Sunday night. Felt crap at work Monday. Came home and was really fluey. Died all day Tuesday. Rang the doctors Wednesday and they couldn't see me but due to having no voice made me an app at same day doctors at the hospital ... present at the hospital Wednesday afternoon and they wanted to admit me. I wouldn't wait, especially in young kids.

Whathefisgoingon · 09/12/2022 20:06

@lollipoprainbow I would just insist on an appointment, stating it is urgent. Failing that, I’d call 111.

Whathefisgoingon · 09/12/2022 20:10

@amiold this is all a bit too reminiscent of covid for my liking.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling bad! On what basis did they want to admit you?

Just said I was really Ill and wasn't giving any reason for him not to

Raised temperature (38.6)
Heart rate was booming (I want to say 129 but not sure)
Throat pain was agonising (struggling to swallow but I could)
I was sweaty to the touch but shivering
My limbs were aching
Bad head
Sore tongue

He said I was playing it down but he knew as soon as I walked in I wasn't well.
Obviously I'd not take a bed as I know people are more poorly. He agreed to allow me home with a few provisos and I've started picking up today but other than Wednesday afternoon I've been in bed Monday afternoon until 11ish today (bar toilet and getting a drink)

amiold · 09/12/2022 20:16

Oh and my nodes were up.

I've got not other health concerns. Don't take any medication and don't usually pick much up. I've had covid twice and it was nothing like this

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 09/12/2022 20:18

My son got diagnosed with it today, soon as I told the doctors his symptoms they told him to come in straight away.

Cripes I'd love to work there if they would consider admitting someone with these symptoms- we are having to turn people away who desperately need a bed!

Op if you're concerned call 111, there are a lot of other things going round too as is always the case at this time of year, but if there are symptoms then it's better to be safe than sorry. They'll usually prescribe over the phone at the moment unless they feel they need to be seen.

amiold · 09/12/2022 20:23

@Guitarbar I don't know there was maybe other concerns that was just what I picked up on. As I said I really wasn't well, I don't even know if they had any beds but he said I was really ill. Are you a doctor ?

TatianaT · 09/12/2022 21:08

On what day tongue turns bright red ?

Rowthe · 09/12/2022 21:10

Well it's the weekend now.

So if you're actually worried I wouldn't be waiting til Monday to sort this out.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/12/2022 21:11

I've kept my daughter off school today - sore throat, headache and she's trying desperately not to cough because it hurts so much. Not eating a lot. When she does cough it's like whooping cough. Really unsure whether to call dr/111 or not. She's happy enough in herself and no fever (so far.)
I don't want to waste their time but don't want to leave it too long in case it is strep/scarlet fever.

Not sure how true it is but I've seen posts on social media saying the chemist can swab for it ?
Calpol for the fever and keep an eye on her. Hope she's ok x

Two of mine have sore throats, coughs and low grade fevers. I'm not taking them to the GP as they are still playing and chatty. If they seemed very poorly I would take them to the GP, or if they had a rash too.

Mine has the same, second time he's had similar in a fortnight but ibuprofen is definitely bringing the temp down so I'm keeping an eye out for the tongue and rash before I call 111 (unless he deteriorates). I suspect he's got some horrible virus as we've all been poorly continually for weeks recently. The last time I called 111 it took nearly 48 hours for the Dr to call me so I am reluctant to call at this stage as they're clearly swamped.

inappropriateraspberry · 09/12/2022 21:51

@amiold not heard that about swabs, will check it out. She's not long got over tonsillitis, but was still moaning of earache, so may have come back.
