Probiotics for antibiotics

My baby of 5 months has been prescribed antibiotics and I'm looking at giving him probiotics to replace the good bacteria. He was born full term, vaginally and has been exclusively breastfed so I'm upset about his 'perfect' ecosystem being disrupted that he had in his gut flora. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge about probiotic brands to help restore his system?

Thank you

You shouldn’t start the probiotics until your child has finished the antibiotics. Otherwise one wipes out the other and the antibiotics don’t work fully. That’s at least what I was told. Sure you know that but just in case you didn’t….

@Babymamamama

Thank you, I thought during was okay if a few hours are left in between the antibiotic doses.

Do you have any recommendations on any brands?

It’s a few years since my little one was a baby but I used to buy all the supplement stuff at Whole Foods and the staff seemed pretty clued up.

I use Optibac drops for my baby. If you are still breastfeeding i wonder if it will get to him via your breast milk?

Eating yogurt will help too.

@Babymamamama

I have the optibac drops but haven't used them yet and I also ordered baby drops from biocare. Do you think the optibac drop have helped/worked? Yes I am still breastfeeding and yoghurt is a staple in our house so I was thinking this should help too.

Thank you

Sorry I mentioned the previous poster instead by accident when replying.

To be honest I have no idea whether they've done anything for my baby. I take optibac too so perhaps he's getting enough from my breast milk (he is 9 months and mainly still EBF). I just got them in a vain attempt to prevent us all getting sick this winter. Hasn't worked so far! Lol.

Breastmilk has both pre and probiotics. Giving your baby one or two strains is likely to delay returning his gut to his normal. Just let him keep breastfeeding.

Sorry I'm being super lazy and not finding the actual study but here is a BBC write up about a study suggesting taking probotics can delay returning healthy guys by over 5 months www.bbc.com/future/article/20190124-is-it-worth-taking-probiotics-after-antibiotics

Concernedkay · 09/12/2022 22:04

@DrJump ooh that's interesting. I have no idea what to do now lol.

My dc was in nicu age 7days-10days for strep. Was discharged with a continuing course of antibiotics. Nurse and paediatririon (subspecialty paediatric gastroenterologist) both recommended a course of bio gaia brand. 5 drops per day until done (about 2 weeks).

Concernedkay · 09/12/2022 22:52

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Thank you that helps. Biogaia has a lot of good reviews.
