Question for those with late primary age DC

Sorry if sounds like a stupid question, I'm just curious and my DD is only 4 so I have no idea 🙂
If your child is old enough to call their friends and ask them over or see if they want to come to XYZ but they're not old enough for their own phone, how do they call their friends?
When I was about 9 we would call each other on the landline of course but nobody has a landline these days, and I can't imagine kids use their mum's phone to call their friend's mum's phone, but I don't think most kids have a phone till they're in secondary? Am I wrong about any part of that? Do parents have to organise everything until the kid gets their own phone?

Dd is 9 and they all have iPads or tablets of some sort and tend to communicate via Skype, or iMessage/FaceTime for those who have the iPads.

Pretty much yes...

My eldest is 12 with his own phone, but seeing as most arrangements involve his friends coming here or him going there, or going to an activity, it comes down to me and the other parent to arrange it properly.

My youngest who has no phone will ask to borrow mine to FaceTime his friends on their mums phone!

Our DS has Just turned 5 and he uses WhatsApp voice message thingy to "drop his mate a message" but soon got bored of that.

I tell him he can invite anyone he wants to the house for tea, a few days notice though and I will check with their parent, so yes, it's his choice but I need to confirm it.
He very rarely wants to though despite having a nice group of friends.
