Transitioning from sleeping bag to duvet

As it's very cold at the moment and our house isn't the warmest, I'm thinking of transitioning my just turned two year old to a duvet from a sleeping bag.

He has been sleeping in a single bed for 6 months (he tossed and turned too much in his toddler bed and needed more space). We have been putting him to sleep in a sleeping bag, I think it may be time to transition. We co-sleep with him in the spare room if he has a bad night and we've used the duvet in there but we've always been with him.

I want to try it alone, I was thinking of maybe putting him in a 1 tog bag and trying the duvet too? Anyone got any ideas/tips?

We recently did this with our 14month old mostly because he outgrew his sleeping bags and I didn’t want to spend lots getting next size up so we just got a toddler duvet (4tog I think) and just one night used duvet rather than a sleeping bag. He does wriggle out of it sometimes but usually when he is warm.

I don’t think doing the switch had any impact on sleep but his sleep isn’t that great anyway!

I would just go for it tbh. We switched over before 2 because they kept wriggling out of the sleeping bag and it was fine - the cot is a bit more contained though! I also pop in when I get up in the night to check if it's come off.

I think you should wait until summer. He won't stay under the duvet and it's very cold at the moment.

We transitioned our 2 year old a few months ago and tbh he always wiggles out of it and doesn't know to put it back on himself. He always has cold feet in the morning so have started putting socks on him now

Could you get a higher tog sleeping bag?

WolfMother326 · 22/11/2022 14:55

I'm curious how does he do with wiggling around in the single bed? Do you have a bed rail? Hoping to transition our 15 m o when he's about 18-20 months. We currently bed share on a floor bed and would like him in his own bed by 2 if possible.

We moved ours to a toddler bed in the summer as it was too warm for sleeping bags. He doesn't seem to have noticed any difference.

We do make sure he has socks on if wearing pjs not a sleepsuit and will put a jumper on him when it's cold too,in case the duvet comes off. He has a 4 tog.

@WolfMother326 he is much better to be honest. He tends to stay the right way up, I think because he can roll side to side as he pleases. He isn't an amazing sleeper but we have definitely seen an improvement having him on a single bed. We do use a rail, his bed is against a wall but we still have a double sided rail which we bought from Argos.

@1stimeboymum I was trying to avoid spending money as things are a little tight at the moment - I'm currently on maternity leave and only qualify for Maternity Allowance due to changing jobs before I knew I was pregnant. I guess I may have to look at a 3 tog bag as an alternative.

@hantsmumofthree thanks for the link, I'll take a look.

He tends to stay in the duvet when we co-sleep but that may be because one of us is in the bed using the same duvet. I think I will try using the duvet when he is having his nap and see how he gets on. If it works and stays put, I'll try it overnight and just keep a close eye on him And make sure he is dressed as warmly as possible.
