What is your 1 year olds daily routine?

My 1yo son is all over the place. Wants to take a 2/3 hour nap in the morning and refuses a nap in the afternoon so is overtired and needs to go to bed at 6.30. He then wakes several times and every night he is sitting awake for at least 2h until he eventually cries and I have to give in and feed him before he will sleep. I need to somehow "re-set" him.

Can you give me examples of your 1yo sleep, nap, food and wake windows as I think this will help me figure out what he needs.

Thanks in advance!

Wakes 6am, breakfast at 8ish, late morning snack at 11/11:30, then breastfeed and nap at 12-2, lunch when she wakes up, dinner at around 6ish, breastfeed and bed at 8pm. She still wakes twice per night to feed.

OM82 · 21/11/2022 09:52

Wakes sometime between 6&7, regardless we follow the same routine. BF at 7.30, food breakfast at 8.30. Nap around 9.15 for 30-45 minutes (in my arms, they don't look like they want it but will always drop off very quickly).

Lunch at 1230 then second nap at 2ish (I like to walk in the afternoon so normally in the pram or carrier, or car if we've been out) for 1-2 hours.

Dinner at 6 then bath, BF again to sleep at 7/7.30. And a couple of feeds in the night still.

(Also a snack upon waking from naps).

Good luck! Remember all babies are different, so it's probably a case of trying different things!

Wakes up at 0700, breakfast 0830, lunch 1130, nap at 1200 for an hour, dinner at 1530, snack at 1800, bath then bed around 1930.

My children are older but by that age we did one long nap after lunch. Neither of them slept well at night at that age. Any ‘reset’ takes about 2 weeks to settle in.

alark · 21/11/2022 10:02

Wake up between 6-7, has some cows milk when he wakes then breakfast at 8am. Naps at 9.30am and 2pm.

FlounderingFruitcake · 21/11/2022 10:06

Wake at 6, breakfast at 6,30, snack at 9, nap 10.30-12, lunch, snack at 3, dinner at 5.30, bath at 6, bed at 6.30.
We had a spate of crummy sleep after a couple of back to back colds but got him back on track by doing the disappearing chair method.

How old is your LO? It sounds like overtiredness may be an issue for him. But there’s a big difference between just 1 and almost 2 in terms of their sleep needs.

It can be tough at this age, with lots of illness and changes for them.

We tend to get up between 6-8, bottle of milk and then an hour later a big breakfast (toast and cereal usually). Approx 3 hours after he woke up he might nap for 30mins - 1.30hr and then we have lunch at 12ish. He won't nap in the afternoon but we schedule a small snack and some down time at 2-3pm. Then it's dinner at 430/5ish and porridge at 6pm before he goes up to bed and is usually asleep before 7pm. He'll wake up a couple of times but will put himself back to sleep until 4am when I usually bring him into our bed/go into his room for cuddles until he wakes up for the day.

Hope that helps. It's been a long slog for us to get this far with his routine, so just do your best and it'll all work out in the end 💙

15mo wakes up any time between 6:30 and 8am.

Usually has a nap around 10:30 - 11.30 ish often for about an hour. If he sleeps longer then I let him.

Then bed around 6:30-7pm.

He will be tricky to put to bed if he had a nap too late e.g. past 2pm, especially if it's a second nap. If he misses his morning sleep, then he can get away with a short afternoon nap and still sleep OK at bedtime.

Does wake up throughout the night still. Especially at the moment as he's getting loads of teeth and he seems to be working on walking.

Never calculated a wake window once they were down to 1-2 naps - I thought that was just for newborns.

jazzyoldjim · 21/11/2022 10:40

Ah so he's only just one, so attempting to continue with two naps for now, with all the night waking he is ready for a morning nap within 2h of waking.

Thanks for all the posts so far, massively helpful. I think maybe I expect too much of him because ds1 was a brilliant sleeper (7-7) 🥲

At just 1 my DS was still on 2 naps, I found he was a nightmare for a while till he dropped to 1 nap but he definitely needed 2 even though he was a nightmare hahah.

So at 1 he would wake anywhere between 7 & 8.30, he was starting to self wean then so sometimes he'd bf upon waking, other days he wouldn't bother.

Then he'd have breakfast around 8.00-9.30 depending on when he woke up

First nap would be around 11/11.30 for between 30 mins and an hour

Then he'd have his lunch around 1pm

Second nap would be around 3.30/3.45 for around an hour

Tea would be around 6.30

He'd then have a bottle of cows milk around 45 mins before bed

Then bedtime would be around 8/8.45 latest depending on how long 2nd nap was and when he woke up.

He dropped down to 1 nap completely by 14 months, for us we knew he was ready to drop to 1 nap when 2 nap days started resulting in terrible night time sleep.

16 month old

Wake between 6&7, breakfast, snack around half 9
Nap around 11 (not set in stone just a whenever she is tired)
Lunch on waking (12.30/1)
Snack 3pm
Dinner 5pm
Bath/bed/bottle 6-6.30pm

She will still occasionally wake looking a bottle around 1am! But this is becoming less frequent.

Westendbuoys · 21/11/2022 11:16

DS had two naps until about 15 mo. I used to cap the first one at 30/40 minutes and then get straight out the house to the park or stay & play then he'd usually have a quick lunch then another longer nap or he'd fall asleep in the buggy on the way home and we'd have lunch after.

chubbachub · 21/11/2022 11:21

Dd is 18 months.
She dropped to one nap right around her first birthday whereas my 5 year old still had 2 naps until around this age. It just depends on the child.
Dropping to 1 nap at this age does take a week or two to settle in though. Eventually you get to a stage where you have a longer wake period in the morning, 2 hour nap then awake until bedtime.

Dd wakes at different times just depending how she feels but usually anywhere between half 7-8. Sometimes she sleeps til 9 and sometimes she's up at 7 like today.
So I go less on times and more on wake periods. I know that at this age she's happiest with around 4.5 hours of awake time before her nap so she's going to bed in around 10 minutes.
She will sleep until around 1.30 or maybe 2. Then she usually goes around 5-5.5 hours of being awake until bedtime which would make that around 7/7.30.

Look up wake windows for your child's age and follow that rather than the clock. Im on child number 3 and I wish I'd figured this out sooner.

MGee123 · 21/11/2022 11:44

15mo

Wakes 6-6.30
Up 7am with small bottle milk
Breakfast 8am
Nap for 10 mins between 9/9.30
Snack 9.30
Lunch 11.30
Nap 12.00 ish for 2 hours
Snack 2.30
Tea 5-5.30
Bedtime routine 6.30 including bottle of milk
Asleep by 7.15

Sometimes she will randomly wake up later - if it's nearer 7 we skip the 10 minute morning nap unless she seems v tired. She mostly sleeps through now, sometimes stirs around 5am to find her dummy but I don't often have to get up.

Calmondeck · 21/11/2022 11:50

I was having these kind of issues with my little guy too and ended up getting the Little Ones app for a few months, which has very detailed sleep/day/eating schedules based on time they woke/length of naps. It helped us a lot (and is still helping at 17 months). I never thought I would be the kind of mother referring to an app (and don’t for anything else) but it’s been a lifesaver for getting days/nights back on track. Hang in there, it’ll get better for you soon.

FlamingGoats · 21/11/2022 20:02

12 month old

Wake up 7-7:30 and has a 7oz bottle
9am - big bowl of porridge and fruit
10am - 11:00 nap
12:30 - lunch
14:30-15:30/16:00 - nap followed by a small snack
17:30 - Dinner
19:00 - Bath and books
19:30 - small bottle (barely drinks it) and bed

Sleeps through :)

SunflowerGirl91 · 21/11/2022 23:24

I think at 1 year old, you’re expecting a lot for him to nap twice a day aswell as sleep through

he is also constantly developing and going through leaps and milestones. He isn’t ‘meant’ to sleep through

PatientlyWaiting21 · 24/11/2022 21:31

Usually awake between 6.30-7am, if awake at 7am will nap at 10am and I’ll wake them after 30 mins, next nap 1.30pm and I’ll wake after 90 mins.
