4.5 y old constant waking

DS used to be a great sleeper since he was a newborn but the last couple of years has gotten progressively worse.

From the occasional waking from a nightmare at 3 years old to waking most nights to now waking several times a night.

It's the second time tonight that I'm woken up by him shouting "mummy mummy! I need you! Quickly, quickly!". I get there and he is perfectly fine, half asleep, I sit by his bed and within minutes he is asleep again.

Some nights he will take an hour to fall back to sleep or start having a tantrum that he wants mummy (if daddy goes to him) or vice versa.

Is this normal?

We also have random weeks where he'll sleep 10 hours straight without waking for a few days in row, but it's getting rarer.

I often read on here that the primary school years are the easiest bit, but I feel like parenting is just getting harder for us. Since starting school he's having more frequent meltdowns too, where he just gets in fits of rage and doesn't know what to do with himself.

I guess the bad sleep must be linked, but how do I fix this?

Thank you from an exhausted and frustrated mum. Also have a 15m old who started sleeping through the night, but still can't catch a break and full night's sleep.

Sympathies. This occurred with my Ds when he started school. It turned out he had caught threadworms!

Hmm I was just wondering about threadworms actually, might give him medicine later just in case.

An hour later and he's woken again.
