How to handle questions without getting DS upset

Hi all.

So I have three children DS age 5, twin DDs age 3. My mum showers my son with love (doesn't really give a shit about the girls) when she sees him. Which isn't regular. It's been mentioned that we take a packed lunch to their house if we go and see them and tbh we feel a bit silly so avoid unless we've been invited. I've asked her not to FaceTime at dinner or bath time as all hell breaks loose, they don't eat properly and just scream to get out the bath to see her etc but she doesn't ask when she can FaceTime so they don't see her like that either. Anyway DS asks to see her and why we can't and I just say we haven't been invited and he gets upset. Any ideas on what else I can say as I'm struggling? Thanks xx

I have a similar relationship with my DM but without the favouritism.

If your DS asks to see her can you FaceTime her?

Yes we have done that but it ends in well I need to go now to get some tea, to go to the toilet, watching tv etc or the best line her phone is going to die and I can tell in his face he's disheartened so I do that but not all the time
