2 year old suddenly hates bed?

My ds has just turned 2 a little while ago.

Last week; basically overnight went from 2-3 hour naps in the day ( which were starting to affect night time sleep) to no naps.

At the same time he changed suddenly from being ok in his bed - normally quite happy to go to bed, be put down after a quick cuddle and go to sleep. - to can't be in his own bed or room by himself.

He wants to come into mummy and daddy's bed, which I can understand. The only way he'll lie down and stop crying is if I stay in his room. But as soon as I leave he gets really upset and we basically start the bedtime process again.

Is this a common toddler thing?

It's driving me nuts. I've gone from having it easy (and being very grateful for it) to having to sit in his room for ages whilst he falls asleep- and then try and creep out without waking him. He's slept so well up until recently, I haven't built the tools to deal with this!

Any advise on things I could try ? Or things that work for you. We don't have a set bedtime routine so maybe that would help.
