When would you transition your toddler to a bed

Lo is coming up to 2 next month, just want an idea when the best time to move to a bed?
She isn't trying to escape her cot yet so not sure if I should just hold out and leave her in her cot until it comes to that?
The other thing is she is a wiggly sleeper... there isn't a point in her cot she doesn't lay in during the night so im slightly worried about her falling out 🙈
we would buy her a low bed first off 😁

Just buy a normal bed and a bed guard!

I moved DS 1 when I needed the cot for DS 2 so he would have been about 2.2. I moved DS 2 when I needed the cot for DS 3 so he would have been about 1.11

and I was knackered for DS 3 and I have no idea when I moved him 🤦‍♀️

but he’s in a bed now! 😂

My son never tried to climb out of the cot so I left him until he was about 4. Don't fix what isn't broke

Don't fix what isn't broke

Basically this!

YorkshireIndie · 12/11/2022 15:27

We took the sides off the cot to turn it into a bed with a foam mat on the side but only because LO refused to really sleep in it when it was a cot. That was at about 18m

We have just transitioned to a proper single because the bed I wanted was in the sale and LO has just turned three

Ds was 2½ years old
Much easier when they can be contained

100% agree with this.

DS is nearly 3 and I'm in no hurry to love him whilst he's content in the cot.

Yes. I agree with the others. I only moved mine because I didn’t want to buy another cot!

Merrow · 12/11/2022 17:04

Agree, when it's dangerous! DS wasn't a climber but got so tall that I was worried he was going to fall over the side. He would have been around 2 1/2. Went into a toddler bed just because his room is small and we got a free one off of Facebook, he would have been fine going straight into a normal bed.

Mylittlesandwich · 12/11/2022 17:06

I've only just moved DS who is almost 3. My cousin is having her second and was looking for a cot so I offered her mine. Got a low single for DS.

Butwhybecause · 12/11/2022 17:10

At about 2¼ because DC2 was due when she was 2½ and I wanted to get her used to a bed well in advance.

No bedguard but I taught her how to get out which she did very regularly for the first few evenings. She had started climbing out of the cot.

If there's no reason to rush I'd probably leave her for a while, a cot might be cosier in the winter months.

15 months with DD1, because I was 8 months pregnant with DD2 and needed to free up the cot for the imminent arrival!
I put a mattress on the floor at first, rather than risk falls from bed height, and to let DD get on and off easily.
I stacked it with her teddies and toys, and showed it to her in the afternoon, to let her get used to it before bedtime. I referred to it as “big girl’s bed” and said cots were just for babies - she seemed v chuffed with it and didn’t want to leave it to come downstairs for tea!

Yep! My little boy is almost 3 and still in his cot. Don't bother with a bed until they're climbing out!

Tomorrowisalatterday · 12/11/2022 17:13

I would wait till it's necessary.

We got a second cot rather than move DS1 when we had DS2 - there are loads on Freecycle around us but even if we had had to buy one, we would still have done it.

BertieBotts · 12/11/2022 17:15

About 2.2 for DS1

Somewhere between 2.5 and 3 for DS2, can't remember.

You'll know when it's time. I wouldn't do it just because they are a certain age. Wait for something to prompt it.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 12/11/2022 17:19

DS1 climbed out of the cot at 22 months, so was in a toddler bed from then. Got a mid sleeper at 5.
DS2 climbed out of the cot at 18 months. Stayed in toddler bed til 4.5, then moved into a small double.

Endlesslaundry123 · 12/11/2022 17:49

We did at 2 5. DD did great! She was old enough to be excited about her big girl bed and to pick out a big girl duvet cover. She helped DH build the bed, moved into it on night 1 and never looked back. 2.5 was the magic age for us.

Apollonia1 · 13/11/2022 00:59

My twins at 2.8 are still in their cot beds. They don't try to climb over the sides, so I'll leave them till it's unsafe.
Then I'll take the sides off their beds, and convert them into toddler beds.

ladygindiva · 13/11/2022 01:14

All 3 of mine have been climbers and put of cots at about 21 months. Otherwise would have kept them there until about 3yo tbh

Caspianberg · 13/11/2022 07:02

About 22 months when he climbed out repeatedly.
He was toilet trained at 25/26 months so needed to be able to get out of the bed by himself by then so he could go to the toilet.
