3 week old no poo

My 3 week old EBF hasn’t done a poo in 24 hours. Prior to that he was doing 1 or 2 big poos in the day and multiple very small ones through out the day. But past 24 hours there has been nothing. I know EBF babies can go several days without going but I thought this was in babies slightly older not this young. Is this normal?

my first at this age was doing 7/8 big poos a day at this age!

If there's plenty of wet nappies I don't think you've got anything to worry about. Poonami in progress 🤞🤞

@Dalooah yes having plenty of wet nappies and still seems fine within himself and not in any pain/distress. I fear a poonami coming too!

My ds went for 5 days without a poo when he was 6 weeks. My health visitor wasn’t worried. But when it did come it was spectacular!

Completely normal 🙂

DS was an infrequent pooer. So very normal. We went to the GP after 10 days and got laxative. Day 11 was fun. 😂

Thanks everyone! How old were they when they went long bouts? I’ve heard 6 weeks onward is completely morning for bowl movements to lessen but not prior to this?

Odds are it's totally fine, OP, but you're right that six weeks is around the time it changes. Very new babies should generally be pooing every day, although of course some don't get that memo! It can be a sign of poor milk transfer or a baby not getting enough milk, but it can also just be your baby's pattern.

If he's been gaining weight appropriately till now and plenty of wet nappies then chances are it's absolutely fine, but with such a little baby it's always best to check with HV if you're worried.

Is it worth doing some leg cycling or very gentle massage (there’s a correct direction to do it in)?

GreenMeeple · 12/11/2022 09:36

Mine went only around once a week from one week old until around 7 months. It's only now at 10 months and eating solids consistently that he is going more than once a day.

@Hugasauras hes having plenty of wet nappies and gaining weight. He’s not distressed at all. He drains my breast at every feed and I always give my boob a little squeeze to see if there’s any milk coming out. If so I try and encourage him to get back on and drain it but most of the time he’s drained it himself. He was doing a poo frequently before this so just not sure if this is now his pattern. My eldest went once a week once she hit 2/3 months but he’s quite young. I think I’ll call HV Monday morning if he’s not gone by then

@SheWoreYellow yes doing bicycle legs and tummy massage but to no avail!

@GreenMeeple thats reassuring knowing that yours started to do this at young age
