Why do people have these? What purpose do they serve?

I see loads of people with them in the middle of their rear windscreen, blocking their rear view!

Someone once told me that it's if you have a car accident and baby gets flung out of the car into the hedge or whatever, the emergency services will know to look for him/her. Having said that, I don't have one...

Threadlice · 29/01/2008 22:37

I've heard that emergency services story. As far as I'm concerned, it all began with a Mothercare freebie to promote their carseats. No use to them at all.

Octothechildherder · 29/01/2008 22:37

I agree with flunelb re the accidents - but then if you drive a whopping great people carrier its usually a giveaway!

I thought it was to let people driving behind you know so they don't drive right up your a**e.

sushistar · 29/01/2008 22:41

yeah, i thought it was to remind other drivers to be careful?

fairylights · 29/01/2008 22:42

yes, i remember seeing on some TV programme that those stickers ARE there so that if you end up in a really nasty crash, the emergency services will look for your LO God forbid..

itsahardknocklife · 29/01/2008 22:44

well that makes me feel justified in having one, despite some people not liking them.

Octothechildherder · 29/01/2008 22:44

Didn't stop some fucker crashing into the back of me with the boys in the car and writing it off

S1ur · 29/01/2008 22:47

the truth about baby signs

Ref: Twiglett apparently

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 29/01/2008 22:49

Because we all drive like madmen unless we see a Baby On Board sign?

itsahardknocklife · 29/01/2008 22:52

obviously not - but if it makes one person that would otherwise be driving dangerously think about it then it is worth it surely?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 29/01/2008 22:58

Did anyone see this btw?

God bless the grandfather eh?

Alambil · 30/01/2008 00:46

If it's to remind people to drive better, I want one that says "Human Being On Board"

Why should people drive better just because there are young humans on board - ANY human should have the same treatment!

and do you take them down if you go out and don't have the kids with you (therefore saving emergency services searching for a non-attending child in case of accidents?)

Tortington · 30/01/2008 03:53

those stickers are for cocks

WaynettaSlob · 30/01/2008 07:14

In my experience, every car I see with one of those stickers is driven really badly.
Why on earth does anyone think I will change my driving behaviour because of a sign on the car in front of me? I mean it's not like I'm going to be tearing down the road at 100mph up the arse of the car in front of me, and then come over all compassionate because I see a sticker on it.......

Tigerschick · 30/01/2008 07:35

I think that, if they are intended to warn people to drive carefully then they are mildly insulting - agree wholeheartedly with Waynetta.
The only one I have seen that I thought was actually a good idea was one that said something like "Children on board - Please be patient".
Of course, if you have a car with curtain airbags (like a lot of modern cars) you can't use them as they would become little, sharpe missiles within the car should the air bags be deployed.

IndigoViolet · 30/01/2008 07:40

seriously naff

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 30/01/2008 08:09

I must be a cock then

Don't see the harm.

I dont have one in my car. There is no way they help emergency services as no one ever takes the sticker out of the car when they are travelling without the baby do they?
I am pretty sure that 99.9% of people do not take any greater care over their driving if they see one of these signs in the car in front either.
Although having said that I was in a car accident with my Dad driving years ago when I was a teenager... it was on the motorway and we got hit from behind at high ish speed when the cars in front of us were almost stationary. My Dad saw the car behind us heading towards us very fast and knew instantly we would be involved in a pile up, he somehow in a split second saw the 'baby on board' sign in the car in front and quickly put his hand brake on and we ended up taking a lot of the brunt of the accident instead of hitting the car in front with a greater force. I always wonder how much difference that made to the baby that was in the back of the car in front and feel quite proud of my Dad for reacting so quickly (even though I got whiplash!! ) but I dont think that sort of thing happens very often!

finknottle · 30/01/2008 09:03

Here in Germany they have stickers with the children's names
I'm far too distracted by them as in the last 5 years or so there's been a huge rise (like 70%) in foreign names and not trad German ones.

So instead of Tobias/Florian/Karl-Heinz or Bettina/Regina/Ann-Katrin you see

Sam/Luis/Ben/Tim
and
Ricarda/Fanny/Lilly (sic)

Alambil · 30/01/2008 09:29

How bizarre finknottle! Fancy having personalised ones lol

Threadlice · 30/01/2008 09:35

Perhaps I should get a sticker that says 'Eight- and 10-year-olds in car so, essentially, drive any way you want.'

Right, that is my only post today. If you see me again, tell me to piss off and do some work.

booge · 30/01/2008 09:39

My thoughts exactly Custardo.
