"Baby on board" car stickers

Why do people have these? What purpose do they serve?

I see loads of people with them in the middle of their rear windscreen, blocking their rear view!

they might come in handy in Asda when you park in the parent and child bits - they hand out fines now if they think you have parked their without need!

wb · 30/01/2008 10:12

I think they are pointless. in the event of an accident so extreme that the emergency services can't see that there is a baby on board then the rear window with precious sticker is hardly likely to be intact.

moljam · 30/01/2008 10:14

but surely youd have carseats to prove you had dc?

to all the people that think they help in accidents-do you really think the emergency services are going to piss around looking for baby on board sign!
'yep princess on board sign here quick'

Is there anyone from the emergency services out there that can comment??

f you have a car accident and your baby gets flung out of the car then you've probably not installed the carseat properly or not strapped the child in.

Harri1 · 30/01/2008 10:44

However naff I thought they were prior to DD now that she's here it reassures me having the sign on because it might just make the idiot driver behind me think abit more carefully about the way they drive. There's no harm in them really.

kekouan · 30/01/2008 10:56

Oh FFS.. there's no harm in them.

I moved to a different area just before I had DS and the drivers around here are terrible for tailgating (one of my major peevs anyway)

Since having the baby on board sign they do seem to have eased off a bit.

Don't give a shit if they offend people, if they make a couple of people ease off a bit and stop driving right behind me, then brilliant.

Don't understand why people get so upset about these.

Now... the little princess ones - they're a bit different.. just tacky IMO

oops

AMumInScotland · 30/01/2008 11:26

I always translate them as "sleep-deprived driver on board".

The emergency services thing is just an urban myth - link in one of the earlier replies....

Threadlice · 30/01/2008 11:57

That's a good point: they could also be translated as 'massively distracted driver'.

I should have one that says: 'Arguing children on board -- mother turning backwards to glare at them; mother in a fragmented mental state; mother probably going to be suicidal any time now; please take evasive action.'

diplodocus · 30/01/2008 12:06

If, god forbid, you're in such an awful crash that your child's car seat is either not visible, or thrown out the car, do you really think a plastic sign stuck to the window with a sucker and a bit of spit will still be there and visible?

SuperGrrrl · 30/01/2008 12:06

i saw a really pleasant one that said 'ex husband in boot'...it must be lovely to know your mother hates your Dad that much.

branflake81 · 30/01/2008 12:14

If this accdident thing is true (which I doubt) surely that means you've got to take the sticker out everytime the baby's not in the car?!

mom2latinoboys · 30/01/2008 12:54

Here in the US you see them less than you did say 10 years ago. It's not really safe considering that it alerts predators that there are children, and makes your car/family and easy target. Same with birth announcements in the newspaper and "It's a boy/girl" signs in front of the house.

3andnomore · 30/01/2008 13:06

Hm...if those stickers are there in case of emergency's...well, I would think people should take them off then if they don't have their child with them...otehrwise the poor emegerncy services look forever for somehting that wasn't there in the first place.

lol finknottle

fifili · 30/01/2008 13:10

That's a good point mom2latinoboys - birth announcements in the newspaper is whole other topic!

If you think a little sign in your window is going to make a wnker not drive like a wnker, you're mistaken.

As I said earlier, if you think your child's carseat is going to be thrown from the car, you really really need to consider strapping it in as per the instructions rather than buying a little hanging sign.

SoupDragon · 30/01/2008 15:56

Oh FFS! "Alerts predators"??

Threadlice · 30/01/2008 17:44

From the Royal Soc for the Prevention of Accidents:

"[Alerting the emergency services] isn't the purpose of baby on board signs, although if the fire and rescue services see one then they may work on the assumption that there is a child in the vehicle.

"We do have some concerns that the signs can obstruct the view from the rear window, or if a driver cannot read one then they may drive closer to the rear of the vehicle - although they can also act as a reminder to drivers to keep their distance. We've never come out for or against the use of these signs but do consider the issues above if you're thinking about buying one."

alfiesbabe · 30/01/2008 18:35

No point in them at all. Are babies lives more precious than anyone else's??

Octothechildherder · 30/01/2008 19:49
Shock
Cathpot · 30/01/2008 19:55

Maybe to let other drivers know to give you a wide birth as very likely you are combining driving with retrieving beaker from under seat/ passing rice cakes to back seat/ singing mindlessly/ swerving to stop to sort out child with poo/ vomit or pencil up nose.

whomovedmychocolate · 30/01/2008 19:55

I think they are awful. You may as well write 'smug breeder' in the dirt on the side of your car and be done with it.

Would be much more effective IMHO to have 'non signalling twat' for white van drivers and 'bigger than you so don't care' signs for skip haul companies etc.

emilytankengine · 30/01/2008 20:15

What's smug about them?
