My Dp is not my dd's father, he's been in her life about 6 years.

He grew up with swearing, I did not.

Every other word of his is a swear word, my dd has since picked it up because of that.

I try to stop as much as possible, her excuse is she's picked it up from him.

I know, he is an adult she is a child so she cant really use that, but i kind of agree with her.

I have asked him several times to stop, he tries for a bit then reverts back. It really is just 2nd nature to him.

Would just like opinions on this really?

Should i really come down hard on her, or him or both?

I’m pretty sweary. In our house the DCs are clear that swearing is just another one of the grown up things they are not allowed to do, like drinking alcohol, staying up late, watching Netflix outside of the kids account, driving the car, using the lawnmower/hammer/drill etc, using the kettle etc.

It’s always worked for us, they don’t swear, although I’ve heard DC12 drop the odd “shit” under his breath alone in his room when building tricky Lego, which I ignore. But he’s in year 8, so… oh, and my then 4 year old came home from nursery saying “what the fuck, what the fuck”. We live abroad and the big kids thought it was funny to say it in English to him in the dinner hall. Spoke to year 6 teacher and it was stopped, and DC stopped saying after a week.

Maybe talk to your DD about it. At 10 she’s plenty old enough to understand that children and grown ups do different things.

Oh, and I wouldn’t come down hard. I’d make a rule and explain the rule. Then apply sanctions for a broken rule, same as all the others.
