Newborn formula feeding

Hey guys, how much should a newborn be drinking at 4 days old? His birth weight was 7lb 5oz. I’ve been trying to breastfeed but it hasn’t been going very well. Is it normal for DS to be drinking 1oz or less every 3ish hours? I’m very new to this so any advice would be appreciated.

It usually gives a guideline on the formula box, both mine started off at 3oz every 4 hours or so and went up to 4oz at a couple of weeks old

Just give what he will take, usually it will be 1-2 oz for the first few days and gradually increase from there but will vary from baby to baby. They need little and often as they have tiny tummies at this age.

Tbh mine does drink about 2oz every 4 hours maybe but he mostly falls asleep in the middle and he takes forever to finish the bottle.

@dreamerkr try feeding more frequently.

For example of baby falls asleep feeding, then wind and put baby down to sleep. But then when baby wakes, feed again as soon as they wake. Then feed again st next sleep (which might only be 45 mins later) and again after waking, and so on.

I would have expected a little more given his size but if he’s feeding and gaining weight then he is fine!
If in doubt rub circles on his cheek whilst feeding and make sure that’s it’s nice and warm as optimal drinking and try the next teat size up for a faster flow. Sometimes the formula struggles unlike breast milk through the smaller teats.
