Calling all prefold snobs, I have a question

Everytime I say to someone else who uses real nappies that I use Cotton Bottoms I get a snobby "Oh prefolds" and I want to know, what's wrong with prefolds?

I am doing my bit for the environment, aren't I? Granted it is in plain white, none fluffy nappies, but I am doing my bit!

I don't have the money for an obsession of any kind, the birth to potty pack cost me half of my grant but it's given me everything I need.

I'm getting fed up of the snobbery over it and I would like to know what people's problem is.

Yorky, yes occassionally if they slip a bit the velcro can irritate DD's leg but this is rare and never had any probs with them irritating her tummy.

As far as I can tell she is comfy in them and has worn them since birth.

Yorky · 31/01/2008 16:41

Thats OK, maybe I'm making the prefold a bit long for the outer as it seems to crease along the velcro where his tummy folds
And he'd much rather be naked and wee on the carpet anyway!

Cocobear · 31/01/2008 20:46

I love prefolds - when I had DD, SIL gave me her BTP pack of Cotton Bottoms and I have up to now found them much nicer than the Motherease ones I had for DS. Motherease were nice, but a more fiddly than a simple prefold, and I haven't had any leaks. They hold it all in just fine.

And I know what you mean about the snobbery about prefolds. I've seen a lot of it on MN.

Nothing wrong with the prefolds - they are really good and resilient - its the crap wraps some companies that make for them that give them a bad name.

Cocobear · 31/01/2008 20:52

Missed your post Yorky. I had he Velco irritation problem, and bought some Nature Babies and Motherease wraps to use over the prefolds. Worked a treat, no more irritation.

Washersaurus · 31/01/2008 20:53

God yes, some of the wraps are awful...Junior Joy spring to mind.

I did try prefolds when trying out different types of nappy, but they weren't as reliable as shaped nappies for us and DH was scared of them. I do still use them for numerous other things now instead.

Cocobear · 31/01/2008 21:01

Yes, as well as being perfectly good nappies, I use them as sweat towels while working out. And hand towels. And tea towels. Try doing that with the poncy shaped ones.

TinkerbellesMum · 01/02/2008 09:54

I'm glad I started this thread now!

Another good use for prefolds you couldn't do with "poncy shaped ones" (lol). Tink is semi potty training (she's 18 months old and decided she won't wear wet nappies but will let Mummy know [usually] when she needs a nappy) and has bad skin on her bum (she looks like she's changed species ) at the moment, of course we've had a few accidents. One on the floor and it's all soaked up in seconds. She's actually really clean and gets upset by it, so I only have to give her a nappy and she cleans it up herself!

I've never had problems with the wraps, you have to make sure nothing, including the liner, is sticking out and there are no gaps and they have to be changed when wet or else you do end up with a wet baby . I've only had irritation from them when the tabs pointed up towards her belly (thanks Daddy) rather than being where they should be.

Washing them - yes, prewash. Wash on your whites setting, with nappisan or something similar (BTPP comes with two boxes of their own brand) and no conditioner. Tumble drying helps fluff them up which they advise for absorbency.

Cocobear, glad it's not just me then!

Sorry to jump in, but wear is the best place to pick up second-hand pre-folds? I used bambino mio previously (had birth to potty pack) but gave away newborn sizes - now they have been lost and I need to get new ones. Thanks for anyone that can help.

FranMay · 02/02/2008 20:34

If you want a 'boring but functional' cheap wrap to go with your 'boring?!' pre-folds, I would recommend proraps (see twinkleontheweb). They are industrial, white and no funky colours!!

WriggleJiggle · 02/02/2008 22:55

I'm using a mix of nappies, mostly motherease and prefold bambino mios. Has anyone used prefolds+airflow (? the poppered ones) wrap with a toddler.
I can't get the prefold to stay in the right place, the airflow is quite loose so the prefold just sort of flops down and doesn't catch the wee or poo. What type of fold do you use?

nappyaddict · 03/02/2008 23:45

a lot of people i know tried prefolds and always got leaks. could it be more that they are shocked you are getting on with them than looking down on you?

SparklyGothKat · 03/02/2008 23:46

rainsbowdays I have some prefolds in size 1 that I am selling.

TinkerbellesMum · 04/02/2008 09:00

I have seen a few people shocked that I got on with them, but mostly it's been snobbery. I'm not bothered by it (apart from deciding that the friendship wasn't worth persuing, but as I said it was the whole deal) so I wouldn't be sensitive to whether it was snobbery or shock.

It seems to me that whenever there is a group of people who aren't doing the "normal" thing, there ends up in fighting over who is least "normal". I've seen it with goths, gays, BLW, real nappies, slinging, ap in general...!

Anyway, Nappyaddict, I haven't spoken to you in ages, how are you doing?

WriggleJiggle I use a mix of nappies and wraps but have found that generally poppered wraps don't work with pre-folds.

PellMell · 04/02/2008 09:17

ooh I was just checking if there were any threads in the archives about prefolds .
I have a huge bag of them to give away if anyone would like them.

nappyaddict · 04/02/2008 09:29

i'm good thanks!! would be good to meet up some time?

TinkerbellesMum · 04/02/2008 17:15

Glad to hear it. That would be good, it was a shame last time, but the littlies always know when to get ill lol.

What do you have PM?

Opps, I should have been more patient, I spent weekend on ebay getting loads of prefolds (I liked them before, want them again), now I need to sort out covers/wraps. Can I ask all you prefold experts, which you found best?

Thanks

p.s. I do confess to getting two totsbots shaped nappies to try!
