Baby not babbling at 9 months?

She's very sociable. Lots of smiles, eye contact, interaction etc. But no consonant sounds at all. Just lots of screeching. Should I be worried?

No! There’s still lots and lots of time for baby to start with the ba ba ba. I wouldn’t worry in the slightest

Thank you!

Similar here. DD is eight months. Had a couple of weeks of ba-ba-ba and da-da-da at seven months and has now reverted to vowel sounds only but seems very keen on communicating with smiles, some waving etc. Hoping the sounds re-appear 🤞

I'm in the exact same position as you with a 9 month old DD. I'm holding on hope that she's just delayed and it will come.

Our DD smiles, interacts and is generally happy with chatty days. It's just that she coos or screeches or screams, which I think is the same as you.

We have a hearing test booked but I'd be surprised if anything comes up on that as she hears noises from our neighbours.

We saw the GP and he said to give it another month or 2 to see if there's any progress and to see what the hearing test results are.

In the meantime I think I'm going to find a baby sign group to help with any language frustration that may arise.

You're not alone

Screeching is a perfectly normal phase so don't worry about that Wink

If you do have any concerns though I'd do this 9 month SLT progress checker. It will tell you what to do if there are any concerns Wink

My little boy has just turned 6 months, again very social and smiley, but no babbling. Lots of raspberries and screeching. He is very flappy too!

how did your little one progress?

jamthencream90 · 17/10/2023 21:51

I can’t speak for the original post, but my DD has picked up talking. She started babbling multiples eg “badaga” a month or so after my post so around 10 months old as if she’d been babbling the whole time. Hearing test came back fine.

Some babies just take their time. She didn’t start walking independently until 18months so she definitely sits in that category!

looking back, I wish I used the energy I spent worrying on just enjoying the moment. The understanding comes first with language so just look out for that and the rest will follow.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 18/10/2023 07:51

@1stimeMum2b when you say he's very flappy, do you mean hand flapping? If so, this is perfectly normal at 6 months, it's only when they're older, say 4 and it's out of step with their peers that it can be an indication that they might need assessing and some additional support.

If you're worried about SaLT, how do they do on this 6 month SaLT progress checker?

Hi, how are your little ones getting on?

Needtimeandspace · 05/07/2024 13:22

I'm the OP and I'm happy to say my daughter is 2 and a half now, and she's actually really advanced with language. She speaks French and English, and she can use up to 10 words in a sentence, and talks CONSTANTLY. So, I don't think the lack of babbling held her back.

I can't say what she will be like in the future, of course, but, for now, I don't have worries about her speech anymore. Just posting for all future googlers out there who might be worried like I was!

Hi @Needtimeandspace that’s amazing to hear, and so positive too.

my DS turns 10 months on the 13th he’s pretty quiet on the babbling front no real mama/dada etc but has learnt how to crawl and pull to stand the past 2 weeks, so hoping it’s just cuz he’s mastering those skills.

Still no waving, pointing or clapping but can bang 2 objects together and then they go straight into his mouth, still no teeth too🙈

it’s just a constant worry

Needtimeandspace · 05/07/2024 19:46

@Mumof3bb1 I'm pretty sure I worried about all this, too. My DD was slow to point and clap, but she's ahead in most things now. I've been there so I know these statements are empty words, but try not to worry.

@Needtimeandspace no it’s actually refreshing and reassuring thank you.

Han22nah · 04/12/2024 11:22

@Mumof3bb1 Hi, how did your LO get on? We are at 9 months now and no babbling just noises l, mainly vowels and shrieking. Thanks

PritiPatelsMaker · 04/12/2024 11:32

@Han22nah have you done this simple SLT progress checker? Wink

Mumof3bb1 · 04/12/2024 21:18

@Han22nah heyyyy honestly I know it’s so much easier said than done, try not to stress I was a mess from 6 months (crazy as they are still so tiny) until things really improved which was around 10/11 months with the babbling and now at 14 months we have 35 words some are animal noises as in rara for a lion/tiger and ooo oooo for a monkey and I’d say the words exploded in the last 6 weeks or so! what worries do you have?

Yas1362 · 15/09/2025 14:22

@Mumof3bb1 Hi. May I ask how is your DS now? Thanks
