Or can't I? I know you usually need the birth certificate which we obviously won't have for ages, and usually has to be done in 42 days isn't it ? I'd be adding the baby to an existing claim

Why such a delay?

themiddlee · 21/10/2022 15:08

No idea? I'm presuming backlog from Covid

very odd. Never heard of such a delay. You need the birth cert number for Cb claim form but you could send it off without it and see what happens?

That's ridiculous!

Has the baby been born? Was it in hospital? Aren't they already technically registered when you have them in hospital?

I don't remember sending off the BC with either of mine for CB.

No, parents have to register them. And you don’t send the birth cert but it has a number on it you need to quote.

I had a baby last year, there was a 2 month wait for an appointment to register the birth so I was worried, but on the CB claim form where it asked for the certificate number I just wrote a note to say not registered yet and the date the appointment was. They processed it and started making CB payments straight away no problem. When I got the birth certificate I just rang them and gave them the number on the certificate.

We didn't get our DD birth certificate until she was nearly 3 months last year which meant we couldn't claim CB until then. The only plus is you will get it backdated.

Flowerfairy101 · 21/10/2022 15:43

I had this in 2020, as pp says I just wrote a note explaining with the date time and location of my appointment to register baby.

themiddlee · 21/10/2022 15:44

Thanks everyone, I managed to get through to them. They said to fill in the claim form anyway so it's on the system and once I have the BC give them a call then they will process it, I won't receive any payments which I thought would be the case anyway, but yes it will get backdated by 3 months.

It's Birmingham register office, not sure if that's why there's such a delay because it's a big city maybe ?

Have they got a local registrar's office you can "declare" at - you have to declare the birth and you get the birth certificate through the post. We had this when DD1 was born, our City centre registrar's office was a 3 month wait but we could declare it at our local town hall office and we were all sorted in 5 weeks.

Weirdly DD2 was born in one of the local lockdowns and was registered on day 8!
