6 week old baby - vomit or spit up?

Hello

my son is 6 weeks old and yesterday morning after his usual amount of feed he woke up to what sounded like choking as he was sounding very congested so I picked him up and he was sick, so I kept him upright and he fell back asleep while being upright
since then he has been throwing up after every feed it’s not projectile vomiting but he brings up milk which is something he hasn’t done to be fair since birth!
He woke up for a feed just now and when I was winding him he was being sick with every burp and it seemed pretty forceful to me
he drank around 150ml and left 30 ml in his bottle and he is asleep now
I must add this evening he was crying every time I burped him
I have mentioned this to the GP and she said that he will grow out of it but I’m a bit concerned as he’s never been sick with every burp before
any suggestions on what it could be?
thank you! Xx

this happened with my son around this age. A doctor advised that he probably had a build of wind in his stomach and to try and wind him every 20 mls of milk. Very annoying in the middle of the night, but it worked. We had to keep on doing this for around 6 weeks before he stopped spitting back up.

Hi @Julia234

thanks for your response! He normally is winded after every ounce I give him and he’s never ever thrown is back up even in the most hungriest of moments!
when he’s really hungry it’s almost like he chugs the milk down but has never been sick the way he has today
I have also introduced infacol to him that I’ve been giving him with every feed apart from this one
do you think that could be causing it?

Is he feeding normally? My DD started throwing up at about 6 weeks (after never really spitting up at all before) and wasn't feeding properly and it turned out she had a UTI and needed antibiotics. Probably less likely in a boy though but if it's a big change to normal it might be worth keeping a close eye on any other factors (feeding, fever etc), especially since he's so small.

Is he having plenty of wet nappies, feeding well (minus the sick) and generally seemingly well? Chances are it’s just his digestive system getting used to things and is a bit of reflux. Try sitting him in an upright position for his feeds and look into paced feeding. If he’s formula fed, you could also try a different brand. Google ‘posseting’ for other advice.

I also used Infacol with my little one and did find if I forgot to give it then the spit up would be more severe.

Honestly, it sounds like you’re doing a great job. I really wouldn’t worry, it’s very common for them to spit up around this age. I remember having to invest in lots more bibs !

if it continues and he’s spitting up a lot, you could also try Colief drops which GP recommended. it’s quite expensive but it did help with my Ds.

Congratulations on baby x

Oh, I forgot to add, if in doubt call GP on Monday for reassurance. I found they were very helpful and non judgemental with any concerns I had about newborn Ds.

Hi everyone

thank you for the advice
I think I might give 111 a call for reassurance he seems very very congested too I’ve just changed him and swaddled him to calm him down
@Blossom45 yes he has very wet nappies, isn’t in pain, isn’t crying or anything
He’s already being pace fed as his grandma suggested I do haha
he did wake himself up coughing when I laid him down
he was upright for atleast 30 mins before I put him down
honestly at this age they really know how to keep you on your toes!
it’s nearly 6am and I’ve only had about a hours sleep :(
