Provisional driving licence

DS turns 17 in January

when can apply for provisional driving licence to ensure it’s arrived for 17th birthday to start lessons ?

was told 16 years and 9 months but went to apply yesterday and it still says can only have a moped one …. Filled out the form (the online site won’t validate his identify for some odd reason) but wondering the best time to send in? If I send it now will he still just get a moped one ? Don’t want to wait 6 weeks for it to arrive to find it’s only moped

Now, You can apply at 16, they can ride a moped at 16 on a provisional.

Ive never heard of just a moped one tbh.

Just looked at gov website and it says :

You can apply for a provisional driving licence when you're 15 years and 9 months old. You can start driving a car when you're 17. You can drive a car when you are 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

I'm in England and ds ordered his when he just turned 16

If you order it now it will just let them ride a moped because of their age.
Once they turn 17 the same licence will let them drive a car and they don't need to reapply for a different one.
