The 9 yr old is my grandchild.
The videos are mostly of games they've played or of their pets and some are of themself, maybe telling a joke or just a smile & wave to say thanks for subscribing .

Is this an okay thing for a 9 year old to be doing? The channel started over 2 years ago but I only heard about it recently. Am I a foolish old gran to be concerned?

A lot of kids don't watch cartoons on TV anymore, they watch YouTube. I would assume the parents were over seeing it and its a hobby for the child. Their image etc may not even be on screen.

"Who watches a 9 year old play video games?"
Other 9 year olds! And kids of all ages. As long as the child is being supervised and their identity is protected to a reasonable degree I would be happy.

The child's face is on screen sometimes, and their first name is part of the title of the channel.

I think this is dreadful. Reinforcing the current idea that nothing actually happens unless you broadcast it on social media. I genuinely believe children should not appear on facebook/instagram/whatever but I realise I am out of sync and that ship has sailed. That said my children (late teens/early 20s) have no footprint on social media other than that they chose to make themselves after age 16 or so.

But I don't think you can say anything as a grandparent. It is the parent's responsibility and decision and they won't welcome your view.

Absolutely not, I don't care how much parental oversight there is, exploiting your children for money or attention is horrifying. Most parents who do this are too dim or attention seeking to fully understand the consequences, it's hard because it's your grandson so you don't get a say but I would be appalled if my children allowed this. Perhaps you should do some research and show this to the parents.

3K for a 9 y.o.? That's really impressive. Nothing wrong with kids learning how to make some cash.

Having 3,000 subscribers is impressive! That said, it's completely normal to be concerned about their online presence.YouTube can be a fantastic platform for kids to express themselves and learn new skills, but it's important to ensure they stay safe. Make sure their account is set to a child-appropriate privacy level, and keep an eye on the comments and interactions to ensure they're positive and appropriate.I’ve found some tips on how to boost your channel and get more YouTube subscribers, which might be useful for you both. Encouraging them while also staying involved is a great balance. Anyone else have thoughts on this?
