12 week old not putting on weight and now losing weight

I was just curious to hear of anyone else who has previously been in a similar situation and what their outcome was.

My little boy was born on the 9th centile and followed it nicely till about 8 weeks old. After that his weight stayed the same till 11 weeks and now this past week he has actually lost a little weight, now meaning he’s not on a centile line at all.

He’s breastfed but they aren’t questioning my supply, he’s feeding 2 hourly, you can hear him swallowing, I can express and he has plenty of wet and dirty nappies. He can be sick quite a lot after a feed but not every feed.

We have been referred for an urgent paediatric review at the hospital but have no appointment yet (fingers crossed should be tomorrow). My mind is in complete overdrive and I’m just questioning everything. I was just after other parents experiences if they have been through this.

What was his birth weight and how much does he weigh now? 🥴 sorry it’s easier for me to understand it that way!

Not me but one of my friends little ones had weight gain issues.

Dropped off the charts completely. They saw a dietician who put her on a high calorie formula and she thrived from there. They could never tell my friend the reason why though. She still BF but had to do top ups with this formula. Her little one is about 4 now and absolutely no issues

Not sure if that's helpful at all but my friend always said the dietician and pediatrician were amazing so hopefully you get the same care ❤️

Hi. My DD had weight gain issues from the start. She was exclusively breastfed and I was always told that it's fine. That she is a clinically healthy baby and doesn't need formula top ups. By the time we attempted to.offer her a bottle it was too late. She rejected them.

She is 6 years old now and currently below the 2nd centile. She was born on the 75th. She's tiny1, not very strong, and I worry that her lack of sufficient weigh gain has also maybe caused stunted growth.

To be honest if I could go back (and I so wish I could) I'd supplement with formula even if the professionals don't tell you it's required. I don't think a 12 month old should be losing weight unless they have just had an illness and it's very temporary. If you are worried about the baby rejecting the breast I combination fed Ds for over a year.

Having said that dropping from the 9th centile to just below the chart isn't as extreme as it sounds. It could still fall within or almost within the 2 centile margin for healthy weight loss or weight gain.

Similar happened to a friend, she saw an IBCLC and he was back on the chart within weeks and then upto 25th centile by 6 months! No formula top ups either, just good breastfeeding support.
