When do girls start wearing bras these days?

My daughter has just started in Year 5 but only just turned 9 at the end of the summer holidays. She told me today that 'most' of the girls in her class are now wearing bras, and she feels embarrassed to be the only one not wearing one. Can this be right? I don't remember wearing a bra until I was at least 12, and even then I'm pretty sure I didn't really need one! Is puberty really starting that much earlier?

I think that many of the girls in my Dd's Y6 class were wearing cropped tops/bralettes. Could she mean that?

PuttingDownRoots · 05/10/2022 22:58

Crop tops. Especially if they are changing for PE in the classroom, even with just girls.

Crop tops. Many girls start their periods at 10/11 so wearing a crop top at 9 seems appropriate.

I'm a TA in Y5 and Y6. I can't think of any girls wearing what I'd call a bra, but most who have developed at all wear crop tops, or vests with support. There are a couple who are more developed than my 20 year old DD who I'd think would be more comfortable in a bra, but seem ok in a crop top.

FarmhouseLiving22 · 05/10/2022 23:07

Yep I started wearing a training bra at about that age, as did most of my friends

gonnabeok · 05/10/2022 23:07

My dd wore a crop top/bralette type thing in year 6

ellieboo9 · 06/10/2022 08:07

Ah perhaps that's what she means. In which case, quite likely then that most of them are. Although even this wasn't a thing when I was at school, at least until Y7/8. Showing my age! Thanks for the replies..xx

I definitely remember wearing some kind of vest towards the end of primary school (and I didn't start puberty until later)

RoachTheHorse · 06/10/2022 09:09

Mine started prior to going into year 6. Just crop top things from H&M but they make her feel more comfortable.

custardbear · 06/10/2022 09:11

Yes crop tops from year 5 for DD and she now wears sports bra tops, she won't wear a bra - to be fair she's changed my mind too so I usually wear similar - far more comfortable

SpringCalling · 06/10/2022 09:13

i've got the crop top . bralettes in for Year 7 DD, I notice on occasion she wears them but mostly not. She doesn't really need them yet but will before long!

My daughter is also 9 (in the summer) and in yr 5. She started wearing a crop top (nothing fancy or padded, from supermarkets) on PE days only as she's embarrassed bring the only girl in her class (mixed yr 5 and 6) changing for PE without one. She doesn't actually need it yet and she doesn't wear it on non PE days either 🤣

I know some of dd’s classmates wear training bra’s/crop tops. She’s year 5 too.

So far, she’s happy not to wear one. I’ll go off her guidance

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 06/10/2022 09:29

My DD is 9 and has nothing there yet but I reckon some of her friends will need something soon so maybe she will ask so she doesn't feel left out. I was a AA cup until I was about 18 and begged my mum for a bra around the end of year 6

mogtheexcellent · 06/10/2022 09:31

DD is year 4 and has started wearing crop tops. This is because she has pectus carinatum (wonky chest) and has just become more conscious of it. She will move to full vests as it gets colder. A couple of other girls wear crop tops. They still change in classroom with boys apart from for swimming lessons.

I was wearing proper bras at age 10 in year 5.
