Period just returned - if I start breastfeeding again will it stop?

I am 8 months postpartum with my first and stopped breastfeeding a month ago (with the odd feed here and there - maybe a couple times a week)

my period just came back which is great as want to start trying for a baby asap, but also now feeling like I would like to still feed my baby some milk. If I let her latch and feed every couple of days will my period stop again? Or now that it’s back is it likely to stay? I still have milk coming through.

my first period has been pretty much how they used to be.

No I don’t think so. My periods returned regularly at 4 months despite DD feeding every 3 hours all because she went 4.5 hours without milk 3 nights in a row.

No unfortunately, it sounds like AF is back to stay.

It's usually linked to night time feeds. So if you're not feeding at night your body thinks that you're ready to have have another baby.

Sorry forgot to add the link!

This article from Kellymom explains the transition to full fertility quite well Wink

You can continue to feed your baby while trying to get pregnant. Plenty of women still BF into their pregnancy! (And apparently you can continue after birth, and will still produce colostrum)

BendingSpoons · 01/10/2022 17:11

My periods returned when I went back to work so had a longer gap (10 hours) between feeds. I was still feeding twice a day when I got pregnant again.

In my experience once it comes back, it doesn’t go away again. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding but word of caution as my milk did dry up when I was breastfeeding DC#1 and pregnant with DC#2. This let to forced cold Turkey weaning which was traumatic for DC#1. And so after that I waited until I’d weaned before trying for the next DC. Not saying that would happen to you, just that it can happen.

I don’t think it works like that OP. Mine restarted about 4 months, both of my two were only breastfeed. If you want to avoid periods, some BC options could help.

Snugglemonkey · 01/10/2022 17:15

I got my period back 3 months post partum, despite feeding every 45 minutes due to a health issue dc had. It was just like pre pregnancy.

dizzydizzydizzy · 01/10/2022 18:30

I don't think So. With DC2 mine came back after about 6-8 weeks, even with EBF.

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/10/2022 21:35

That's rotten luck @Snugglemonkey Flowers

Snugglemonkey · 01/10/2022 21:52

Yeah @PritiPatelsMaker I was really upset as I had a low ovarian reserve and was freaking out about my eggs. I think I was a hormonal mess!

PritiPatelsMaker · 01/10/2022 21:55

That's doubly bad luck. My DF has had 4 DC. BF them all including tandem feeding and her AF has retired at around 4 weeks each time.

It really is luck of the draw but that doesn't help you at the time Flowers
