My DS 2 was 9 1/2 pound at birth and is now 7 weeks and over 13 lb! He seemed to be a tiny newborn for such a short period of time (2 days!) i feel like i blinked and missed it.

Don't get me wrong, I am besotted with him and graeful that he is here (had missed mc last year)but i was interested to see if anyone else feels this way.

Me! Dd was 4lb and a tiny baby forever,ds1 8lb 1 so quite litte and then ds2 was 9lb7 and a little baby for a fortnight!!!! I love the tiny baby bit. Luckily dd2 was 7lb so was little for longer.

SorenLorensen · 24/01/2008 12:17

I feel like that about both of mine and they were 7lb 1oz and 6lb 15oz respectively They are only newborns for such a short period of time - and you look back and think "when were you ever that tiny?!"

In a few more weeks/months you'll look back and realise he is still tiny now.

Congratulations, btw

bossykate · 24/01/2008 12:18

well dd was 10.5 lbs and i did think that would make 2 babies

mine was 12lb 12oz so he looked 3 months when he was born! didn't fit in any of the newborn stuff went straight in to 3-6. however he was MY newborn, he was tiny to me, so I don't think I ever felt I missed out. But I would love another newborn now though!

Nanoon · 24/01/2008 12:19

i know, its mad really. i think becasue i already have a son who is three i am fully aware of just how quickly the time goes by and i'm trying to hang on to every minute of this one being little

Ooh no, mine was 9 lb 15 - he looked like he'd eaten one of the other babies on the postnatal ward! - but I was MUCH happier that way round, he seemed so much less fragile and it gave me much more confidence dealing with him.

BroccoliSpears · 24/01/2008 12:20

No, I felt the opposite! I was so happy to have a big baby that I didn't have to worry about or stress if she slept through and missed the odd feed.

tortoiseSHELL · 24/01/2008 12:21

I did a bit - my 3 were 9lb12, 10lb0 and 10lb2, and I did feel a little bit cheated as virtually everyone gets to have a 10lb baby (as their babies grow!), but I never got to have a little 7lber!

The smallest I had was ds1 as he shrank from 9lb12 to 8lb10, so he did get a bit smaller!

bozza · 24/01/2008 12:24

Just wonder why DS (9 lb 10 at birth) was at his highest centile when I was actually carrying him - I was like the side of a house - and now at nearly 7 is quite a skinny thing. Although he still has a big head - and big bones - just that now we can see all those bones poking out.

Nanoon · 24/01/2008 12:24

my first ws 8 1/2 so he did seem tiny plus I didn't know any better. Just think if i can convince DH to have a third it will more than likely be well over 10lb

Chopster · 24/01/2008 12:25

yep. I thought I was being weird! My ds was the same weight, didn't even fit newborn clothes when he was born.

I've had twins since though, and they were 6lb and 6lb7. I thought it was lovely and I at last had 'proper' newborns...until I got home and realised that they needed feeding every two hours and there was no way they were ever going to sleep through at 6 weeks like ds1!

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 12:25

No not at all! DS was 10lb 9oz and I loved the fact that he didn't seem too squashable when we co-slept.

Tortington · 24/01/2008 12:26

no thats like comparing them to a puppy - i love my baby becuase its a mini me - kind of thing

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 12:27

And I also felt the stretchmarks were (slightly) more justified

BTW lol at the typo of lardge...v appropriate!

Nanoon · 24/01/2008 12:29

oh my god yes lol.

No - ds 10.5 at a week early - and didn't appear 'fat' at all, just solid. He could lift his head off my shoulder from day one (winces at remembering him hitting it back down) and he was fantastic at bf. Being fairly big and solid, dh wasn't afraid of picking him up and doing things with him - which meant he took a share right from the start. He never wore nb size, and only 0-3 for one month, but so what... Despite size I managed to walk the dog up until the day he started to arrive, although did look like a whale.

All in all, I was much happier that he was large than I would have been if he was small...

CarGirl · 24/01/2008 12:35

yes I felt absolutely cheated with dd2 as 10lb6oz none of the clothes I had fitted, she was slim but very very tall and didn't hit the centil charts for length until she was 4/5 months old!! In the car seat she completely bypassed the first set of harness slots. I was still a bit miffed with dd3 & 4 being 9lbers but at least I was expecting it that time around!

EzrasMummy · 24/01/2008 13:41

Mine was just over a pound at birth. He weighed about 5 pounds 4 at 4 months old, and i thought that was HUGE!!!

saffy202 · 24/01/2008 14:41

Yes with ds1. He was 9lb 8oz at birth with loads of hair. He looked as if he could get up and run around

fruitloop79 · 24/01/2008 14:52

Yes, definately!

DS was 9lb 12oz and all those really cute outfits I bought him before he was born were too small .
I'd found the most cutest little outfit in BabyGap and was adamant this would be his 'going home' outfit but I had to give it to my friend who had a 3 pounder! I didn't realise it was for an 'under 7 pounder' new born. It was sooooo cute too at least it didn't go to waste. No one told us we were having a large baby. In fact we were told 'not big like his dad'! Wish they'd said something earlier cos it could've saved a lot of pushing (18 hours later I had an emergency C-section). I'm gonna make sure they tell me next time!!!!!

Yaddayah · 24/01/2008 14:55

Dd was 10lb 7oz, she had a double chin, when I left the hospital she was literally twice the size of all the other newborns. Straight into 0-3 clothes. It was a bit odd, she was lovely but missed out on the first few weeks of people "squeaking" at her IYKWIM

quickdrawmcgraw · 24/01/2008 14:59

funnily I didn't feel cheated until dn was born. dd was 9.2, ds was 10.10. They were such a weight to carry from early on. ds was a stone at 6 weeks. Although I would have aspired to a brown rice and sandals type of parenting, carrying offspring around until it was time for school I just couldn't without having an s-shaped spine.
my niece was born and she seemed such a feather. I minded her full time for 6 months and she was so lovely to have on my hip/in carriers etc.

ditto with all the cutest outfits. I'd bought some lovely newborn ones for ds and they didn't fit. I ended up having to dress him in dd's pink ones in the hospital.

Acinonyx · 24/01/2008 16:25

It hits me when I see other newborns and realise that I never had one like that. Dd was 9 lb 13 oz, held her head up, eyes open, from birth. She was like a 2 mo old and was never like a newborn. 'Real' newborns seem so tiny and fragile!

TellusMater · 24/01/2008 16:28

Nooooo. I'm scared of tiny, fragile babies. I like them good and robust .

SnappyLaGore · 24/01/2008 16:33

lol, i thought that about my 9lb2 baby.... 'what a con' says i, 'all that effort and the teeny bit is over already'

of course its only a passing thought. i mean, big bouncing healthy baby: bloody smeggin marvellous, and i'll have it thanks.

but yes, youre not a monster for thinking it. (unless i am too, which is always a possibility i suppose)
