My DS 2 was 9 1/2 pound at birth and is now 7 weeks and over 13 lb! He seemed to be a tiny newborn for such a short period of time (2 days!) i feel like i blinked and missed it.

Don't get me wrong, I am besotted with him and graeful that he is here (had missed mc last year)but i was interested to see if anyone else feels this way.

I know exactly what you mean - DS1 was only 6lb 10oz when born but he was putting between 12oz and a lb a week pretty quickly and I felt like his newness was slipping away so quickly.

Even worse with DS2 who was 9lb when born.

It is a case of blink and you miss it with the newborns.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 24/01/2008 16:36

Well DS was 9lb 12, but "fortunately" (???! [hm]??!!!) was very ill for so many weeks that he lost loads of that weight and was skin and bone for a long time.....

No, I loved the fact they weren't small and fragile looking - made me feel far more confident. Little babies make me nervous

No. I remember feeling quite terrified holding a friend's newborn baby because she was tiny compared to mine.

Twiggypiggy · 24/01/2008 17:05

I felt cheated. Ds1 9lb 4 and ds2 9lb 6. The nappies that I took to hospital with me, I gave away to the lady in the opposite bed.

Funny thing is, Ds2 (now 8) is the most scrawniest boy now.

LoveAngel · 24/01/2008 17:08

I'm scared of those tiny, weeny delicate little newborns, because I only have experience of a 10lb bruiser. He never had that 'floppy' head that newborns tend to have, and he always had his eyes wide open and looked alert from the get go. And his body was strong and covered in a layer of lovely puppy fat. If I have a little chicken baby in the future, I won't know what to do with it!

zubb · 24/01/2008 17:14

I'm with systemaddict, serenity & loveangel - all three of mine were over 9lb and thats the way I wanted it! The faster they got bigger the happier I felt as I was more confident handling them.
Also, going against the grain, I wanted the newborn stage over as fast as possible each time as I found it quite boring.

Hecate · 24/01/2008 17:15

Each of mine weighed in at about 10 and a half pounds. They both had a full head of thick black hair (proper hair, not the sort that rubs off!) and ds1 cut his first 2 teeth at - - - 3 months

I never had the tiny baby babies, erm...iyswim they went straight into the 3mth & 3-6 month clothes!!

Like a few others have said, I also felt really nervous holding little (proper ) babies, because they looked like they might break! whereas you could have used mine to break coconuts

I didn't care then and I don't care now. Didn't feel cheated at all.

I needed stitches halfway up my back though.....

OriginalFlame · 24/01/2008 17:19

Both of mine were 8lb 5oz, and I hold little newborns thinking "Aww, I don't remember mine being this small" and then realise that no... they weren't!

yetanothername · 24/01/2008 17:52

Mine was 12lb 4oz, but as I'd had nothing to do with babies before then... well, he was just my newborn! Had decent neck control though, he used to nut me if I was holding him and he was rooting for the boob!

FoghornLeghorn · 24/01/2008 18:01

My DD's were 8lb 9oz and 8lb 13oz and I loved it - I think having chunky babies is great, with their chubby legs and chubby cheeks .

Oohhhh this has made me feel all gooey about #3

ruty · 24/01/2008 18:03

ds was 9lbs 14 oz and i didn't feel cheated, on the contrary he still felt so fragile and small, but was relieved he wasn't underweight or premature.

alfiesbabe · 24/01/2008 23:34

My first was a biggie and she had a full head of hair too, so she never really felt like a tiny newborn. But my second was a prem - 3lb - and I quickly realised that the one big advantage of a premmie is that they stay as a tiny baby for ages! She got to average newborn size by about 3 months.

LadyOfTheCauliFlowers · 24/01/2008 23:38

Ds1 was 9 9.5 and Ds2 was 10 12.5

They were tiny to me as I knew no different, but caused a bit of a kerfuffle in the maternity unit.

SparklyGothKat · 24/01/2008 23:50

I have never had a big baby, all mine were teeny. DS1 was 5lb 2oz, Dd1 was 3lb 12oz, Dd2 was 3lb 8oz and Ds2 was 4lb 8oz. DS2 is now 9lb 14oz at 17 weeks, and still smaller than some of these on here were born at

verylittlecarrot · 25/01/2008 00:00

My 26 week dd is still only about 9 and a half pounds and I'd love her to weigh a bit more!

SGK - can't believe Callum weighs more than babycarrot now!

SparklyGothKat · 25/01/2008 00:09

VLC Have added a thread in chat for us, so we dont hi-jack this one

Monkeytrousers · 25/01/2008 00:16

DS was 9 1/2 and no, didn;t feel cheated at all - didn;t know what to expect so what could I miss?

BarbadosMama · 25/01/2008 01:32

When ds2 arrived chubby and getting rapidly chubbier, a friend said "Lucky you, he'll be sleeping through from 6 weeks" and she was right. More than made up for any loss of the cute tiny time. IMO the real downside is the pressure on your poor aching back - ds2 must have cost me a fortune in osteopath visits!

same here, I'm happy with big robust babies
(9 lbs 14 and 10 lbs 5)

and the newborn stage only lasts a nanosecond whatever weight they are anyway

my DS is nearly 11 months and I am a bit sad he's not a little baby any more!

Swedes · 25/01/2008 10:07

DSs 1 and 2 were both 9lb 9oz. DS2 was placed in SCBU because they thought he had a dislocated shoulder (caused during the birth). He looked such an imposter next to all those really tiny little ones.
Children 3 and 4 were 8lb and 7lb 15oz, I felt quite disappointed by their size (ridiculous I know).

I was proud of my big, healthy babies and if it takes a while establishing feeding you don't panic as much as you would (I imagine) with a 5lb-er.

Anyway, big babies live longer and are brainier.

TOD · 25/01/2008 14:58

Yeah my DD is 19 weeks old, she was also 9 1/2 pounds born! She was 16 1/2 pounds at 12 week check...god only knows what she weighs now...afraid to check!!!
My friend recently had baby girl..6 1/2 pounds and she looks so fragile and tiny!!
Maybe we lose out a little on the really newborn stage but are'nt those fat cheecks just adoreable too ..

MamaMaiasaura · 25/01/2008 15:01

Glad ds's were substatianal, 8lb12oz and 8lb14oz. Ds2 was 4 weeks yesterday and weighed 11lb6oz.

Feel a bit sad that he is already out of his newborn snowsuit and other bits so you arent bad for thinking it.. but also loving his chubby legs etc!

Ds1 was 10lb 5oz and Ds2 (now 6 days old) was 9lb 7oz and is known as "titch" given his relative scrawniness!

I felt that my babies were the perfect size and wouldn't know what to do with the scrappy newborn in the next bed.
