6 month old has dropped all naps?

chestersayshey · 20/09/2022 07:46

That 6 month old is now 8.5 months old.

She has dropped all naps since 6 months.

Terribly disappointing Envy

Is this normal? Did anyone else's baby do this and then start napping again when they're older?

Thank you

She took her first steps last night and I'm hoping it makes her tired enough to go to sleep in the day!

Oh wow that's suuuuuuper young to drop all naps. What's her general routine like? Do you offer her a nap within about 2.5 hours of waking in the am?

BertieBotts · 20/09/2022 09:19

I think it would be very unusual for a 6mo to drop all naps. Does she really stay awake all day? Is she grumpy? Some children need less sleep than others and are fine, but most 6mo would fall asleep feeding (and they have a lot of milk feeds at that age) if they had been up for the whole day.

How did you used to get her down for naps?

I don't know anyone who had a baby that young that dropped all their naps. I would think it would be very rare for a young baby not to need a daytime nap.

How's her nighttime sleep?

ZuliKyanLarsFoz · 20/09/2022 09:24

That's really not normal. Most would still be on 3 naps a day at 6 months. What have you tried to get them to sleep?

Miriam101 · 20/09/2022 09:32

Could it be that maybe you need to put a bit more effort into getting her to sleep? At that age plenty of babies are rocked, carried, pushed in buggy for naps- they've woken up to the world so need a bit of lulling, rather than just being "put to bed" or whatever. It is extremely unusual for a six month old to not need any sleep in the day.

First steps at 8.5 months and no naps? You have a very precocious child... 🤔

Endofdaysarehere · 20/09/2022 09:50

Best to talk to your hv OP, make sure everything is ok?

Maybe there is a parenting class local to you that will help?

Mine is 3 and a half years and has just decided to drop his nap. He falls asleep on the sofa just before dinner every day and it's a nightmare. I've never heard of a 6month old dropping all naps.

RedRobyn2021 · 20/09/2022 09:52

It is unusual tbh. How is little one sleeping in the night?

MsChatterbox · 20/09/2022 09:57

Mine dropped at 19 months and I thought that was young! Agree with pp in terms of what have you tried to get her to sleep? My first was awful at napping I would sometimes spend 1.5 hours to get him to take a nap.

Waits for deletion...Hmm

cptartapp · 20/09/2022 10:01

DS1 dropped his naps at twelve months and it was a real struggle to get him to nap leading up to that, always had to be in the car or pram.
Slept all night from twelve weeks though.
Six months seems very young.

This was me as a child! My mother asked the doctor at the time, and they weren't worried about the lack of naps.

And I was indeed a very precocious, "advanced" child. Unfortunately, I then grew up to be an extremely average teenager and adult. And despite not sleeping much as a baby, I am making up for it as an adult Grin

Calphurnia88 · 22/09/2022 10:21

Wow my 6mo is on 3 naps and I'm pretty sure he would go for 4 if he didn't fight them so much (we go for an early bedtime instead).

This is very unusual.

DontTrustThisPoster · 22/09/2022 10:22

Borderline unheard of I’d say! We are at 13 months and only recently dropped to one nap. My first child was also two naps until after a year. I’d definitely be speaking to HV or GP

StampOnTheGround · 22/09/2022 10:23

My nearly 6 month old wouldn't nap if I just left him to it, however I force naps because I know he'll need it!

Notajogger · 22/09/2022 10:27

As pp said, how much effort are you putting in to get her to sleep? My first was always a terrible sleeper and it would sometimes take me a couple of hours to get her to nap.

PrimroseWharf · 22/09/2022 10:53

My 7 month old wouldn’t sleep full stop if I didn’t force the issue. What have you already tried to encourage baby to sleep? Pink noise, feeding, rocking, bouncing, lullabies and shushing all help my little one. Weirdly, she will nap in the pram for other people but rarely for me.

We also contact nap quite a lot which can be infuriating at times when the washing pile is sky high and there’s so much stuff to be done but at the same time it makes me slow down and just enjoy some baby snuggles. Will little one settle on you?

LT2 · 22/09/2022 10:55

I have an 8 month old - definitely very suspicious that she dropped all naps and has taken her first steps. Yes, all children develop at different rates but she would be the only one to be doing these!

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 22/09/2022 11:07

My dd stopped naps after about 4 months so it does happen! She occasionally fell asleep in the push chair but not regularly. She was quite a placid baby and not grumpy. I breastfed her so if niggly she had a feed and was ready to go! Never been a child who needs much sleep and is now heading for teenager years we'll see what comes! If yours is happy then don't worry. I have a friend whose 3 year old used to take 3 hour naps daily, that seemed rather odd to me.

ZooKeeper19 · 22/09/2022 17:06

Brain develops when we sleep. There are medical reasons for which our bodies need sleep. I would try bottom out why a 6mo (or 8,5mo) do not sleep during the day. Every baby is different, but not getting enough sleep may be a problem further down the line.
