Ok what is the difference between prefolds and flat nappies? Do prefolds still need pinning???

prefolds have three panels (the middle one is thicker than the other two) you fold the two edge panels over the middle one, place it inside a gussetted wrap as a 'pad' and do the wrap up. No need for pinning or securing as the prefold sits as a pad inside the wrap.

Flat terry nappies can be used in the same way if you like.

I'm not a huge fan of prefolds but always have a few decent flat terry nappies in my stash

you can also pin them round to give a good containment. If you lay it longways on, lay the baby on it, fold the front part into three sideways then sort of twist it over sideways and pull the sides round to the back and the sides of the back round to the front then fasten with a nippa it gives a really good fit. Bikini twist I think it's called
But padfolding works well too
