At wits end with why 5 month is crying

My boy is 5 months old (he's 17 weeks corrected as 5 weeks prem). We've had a lot of issues with feeding him since birth and I'm now completely out of ideas as to what's up with him and what to do.

He was supposed to be breastfed but due to a low supply from me and his issues feeding, we introduced a bottle and he then refused to breastfeed. As my supply was low pumping didn't work out for me so he's been bottle fed for the past few months.

He seemed fine on formula at first but started to cry while eating and it got harder and harder to get anything into him. Health visitor said it was reflux, GP said it was one of those things babies do but prescribed gaviscon anyway. I suggested CMPA and both GP and HV instantly dismissed that. He didn't get better on gaviscon, just got constipated on top of the other issues. Soon he started to get lots of mucus in his poo and he would cry for a whole day before going to the toilet. Took him to his neonatal consultant, he said it was CMPA and prescribed aptamil pepti. He also said reflux and gave omeprazole. Over a month later and he is still extremely difficult to feed, he pins himself backwards and screams and continues to cry because he's hungry. I tried changing him to neocate a few weeks ago but it's not making much difference.

He's still gaining weight at an ok rate, I persevere until he eats enough but it's getting so stressful and I just need to know what's up with him and what I can do to help him as I hate seeing him so distressed. Any advice welcome.

Is he on any solids? I've seen people say that it gets better once they start with real food. I know they say 6 months but he's not far off?

He's not on solids yet, I'm desperate to start putting him on solids but HV says not to until he's past 6 months as he's premature. I'm considering compromising and starting him on solids in a couple of weeks anyway so he will be closer to 5 months corrected. I hope it will help his reflux.

Baby rice can apparently be used from four months - perhaps have a look at introducing that?

That sounds like a good idea, I'll give that a try and see if it helps him. Thanks 😊

Both mine had a bit of baby rice and porridge from about 14 weeks. They seem ok. I'm not suggesting finger food or full meals.

I think if your baby is uncomfortable then it's worth a try
