Toddler ate raw flour ! Panicking

Is this terrible of me? We made home made play dough (just like we used to when I worked at a nursery) so the flour wasn’t cooked.

Toddler put a chunk in her mouth and was eating it. I wasn’t concerned but my partner pointed out that’s not a good idea so I have googled and seen it can contain ecoli and it’s very dangerous. I’m now panicking !!??? I never knew this !!! On the back of the pack it says raw only eat cooked - I never would have thought uncooked flour was such a risk!? I ate it all the time as a kid in cake mix etc 😫

They'll be fine. Don't panic.

Wombat27A · 13/09/2022 11:31

I think it's one of those things that we all did but can carry a risk.

All you can do is watch for any signs of sickness.

I still eat cake mix and raw egg...but I wouldn't if I had any risk factors.

PestoPasghetti · 13/09/2022 11:38

It never occurred to me flour might be a risk? What about bread rolls that have it scattered on top? I survived many a 'scraped bowl' as a child. I think most of us probably did!

She'll be fine. My daughter eats it like it's sugar every time we bake no matter how much I protest. I don't know why because it must taste gross.

My dh got really irate I let the kids eat cake mix left overs because of the raw eggs but I never thought of flour as a potential hazard.

Needmorelego · 13/09/2022 11:42

I doubt there's a child out there who hasn't stuffed some flour or homemade play doh in their mouth.
She'll be fine 🙂

Damnautocorrect · 13/09/2022 11:46

Do you know how much cake mix & cookie dough, my family have consumed in our x amount of years on this planet. probably enough to fill 25 olympic swimming pools
. It’s fine.

Tdcp · 13/09/2022 11:50

I can't count how many times DD has done this. Your little one will be ok :)

KneeQuestion · 13/09/2022 11:50

This is why some play dough recipes have large amounts of salt. To make a child’s pit it out if they try to eat it

I wouldn’t worry though.

LionessesRules · 13/09/2022 12:14

I eat raw flour every time I make cake or biscuits - so a couple of times a week.

But, it's worth putting a mountain of salt in the playdoh - stops anything growing in it if you store it for a few weeks, and makes kids spit it out if they try to eat it!

FiveLittleDucklings · 13/09/2022 13:34

Most likely you have nothing to worry about. Your toddler is probably is probably putting other things into their mouth too.

bodie1890 · 13/09/2022 13:37

It's very very unlikely to cause any problems.

Put salt in it in future to discourage.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 13/09/2022 13:41

My toddlers eat raw cookie dough every time we bake, no matter how many times I ask them not to. They’re typically very obedient kids, but that’s the one thing they can’t resist. It would be hypocritical of me to get too upset, because I can’t resist it either. 😳

Sandysandwich · 13/09/2022 13:45

Its fine the risk is really low
But if you do want to avoid her eating it again, you can dump the flour on a baking tray and bake it first to kill of anything- we used to have to do it to make a safe version of cookie dough for eating raw

I wouldn’t worry though.

I think it's to preserve it so you can keep it for longer.

OP she'll be absolutely fine.

bloodywhitecat · 13/09/2022 13:50

I can't remember the last time I heard of anyone getting e.coli from eating raw flour, your toddler will be fine.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 13/09/2022 13:56

My son once licked a pram tyre and drank water out of a manhoke cover. My sister ate a house spider. We have all eaten a lot of uncooked cake mix.

Your child will be OK, don't worry!

dottiedodah · 13/09/2022 14:03

My friends DS ate a bit of snail UGH! However all well and good and now grown up! Your LO will be fine Im sure .

PestoPasghetti · 13/09/2022 21:00

Oh yeah, flashback to a family I used to nanny for who lived on a farm. The children drank out of the bloody water troughs, green slime, bird feathers and all! They thought I was really uptight for not letting them on my watch!! They had the toughest constitutions.
