To wear: as soon as she was interested (around 2). To buy: whenever it's convenient I include her in buying decisions (probably started around 2.5).

I agree. Chose her own ‘outfits’ at 2 had some great combinations!

Stickmansmum · 12/09/2022 23:08

As soon as they showed any preference for wat to wear.

Theyve come out in some weird shit over the years

As soon as they cared. About age 3

WindowsSmindows · 12/09/2022 23:13

Yeah, around 2. No point buying something unless she wants it. And I can't imagine telling someone else what to e wear outside of some weather based suggestions!!

pastabest · 12/09/2022 23:17

Age 3, both had very firm opinions from that age onwards.

I vetoed if needed, but only if I absolutely had to.

DD has chosen from around the age of 2. I'm more opinionated if we're going out somewhere nice though so then I tend to let her put together three outfits and then I choose one of them.

DD is 5 now and has just started to get the hang of putting outfits together that range between looking passable and looking fab which is an improvement on the weird and wonderful combinations we've had in the past!

Around 4 or 5

PinkDaffodil2 · 12/09/2022 23:52

By 2 years old was interested in what she wore, now is just turned 3 and has very very strong preferences which I take into account when buying clothes! If she is with me for example at the supermarket she can choose her own within reason - loves choosing pants at the moment and lives in dresses.

DD is 9 and has never been that interested in shopping for her own clothes — when she was about 4/5 she started requesting particular items like “more dresses” or whatever, but she’s always been very happy for me to choose and buy all of her clothes and then she just picks which of them she feels like each day!

Makes it easy as I buy a mixture of things from sales and eBay and so on, and she always seems happy with what I get. She’s also generally pretty good at putting together outfits, even from 4/5 onwards, so I rarely have to get her to change (though we have in the past had a few occasions where she’s had to be inveigled out of a party dress when we’re going to a farm or something 😂)

My son was a pita for clothes from 2 onwards. I used reversed psychology and offered him clothes to wear that I didn’t want him to wear …worked every time 😊

lailamaria · 13/09/2022 17:41
  1. to buy at about 8
MajorCarolDanvers · 13/09/2022 17:44

My daughter started picking her own clothes from about age 4/5. She detests skirts, dresses, pink fluff etc and always wants to ensure that whatever I buy is acceptable to her and practical for playing in.

My 14 year old son is so disinterested in clothes. His only shopping instruction is nothing day-glo. He picks his own clothes out of the drawer on the basis of whats on top.
