Omeprazole experience

My 5 month old has been put on omeprazole by our pediatrician (we went private after no luck with NHS).

His symptoms were:

-Very low weight gain (below 2nd percentile, sometimes way below. Born 25th.)

-Difficulty feeding (turning away, crying, arching back)

-Green, mucousy poo

He's on 2mg per kg, split morning and evening. The first 10 days were really good and he put on 300g after not gaining anything for the 3 weeks prior. He was eating for longer and didn't seem upset when eating.

He's now back to where he was before, hasn't gained any weight in 2 weeks and refusing to eat. Lots of high pitched screaming- not usually when eating and seemingly random.

We're seeing our pediatrician this week but I'm feeling really demoralised after getting my hopes up and I just want to get an idea of other people's experiences with starting omeprazole. Did it stop and start like this? Did your babies get better??

Thank you 😊

Hi, we went through those same symptoms with our then 3 month old (minus the nappy problem)

Probably not what you're hoping to hear, but the omeprazole worked miracles and we never had any problems again. I weaned him off of it once he was eating proper meals.

Hope your paediatrician can help with answers!

Same as previous poster. My DD went on it at 8-9 weeks old. We used the full dose in the morning though rather than splitting it.

I thought it worked as a pump inhibitor which is why it was recommended for use in a morning.

it worked like a miracle for us, and once dd started weaning at 6 months, we reduced it, she was off it fully by about 8 months old. Never had a problem since.

We had a bit of trial and error to get the dosage right after the first few weeks but it helped a lot. It works best on an empty stomach so had it first thing in the morning.
he had it from 10 weeks till around 14 months then we weaned off it. Also had carobel to thicken milk feeds

You've probably not got the dosage right yet, your doctor will probably try increasing the dose ozn your next visit x

Thanks everyone for your replies. The pediatrician said to do a split dose because it has a 12 hour half-life.

I'll see what he says on Wednesday. The poop issues are making me think it could be allergies but he did respond well to the omeprazole the first week. I guess it could be both and they're linked, or I just have a really unlucky baby!
