5.5 months old taking only 30-40 mins naps

That's it really. My baby takes only 30-40 mins naps.

Is it normal for 5.5 months old to take such short naps?

How do I help her to extend naps? She's so awake after the nap that it's hard to put her back to sleep. But then after 45 mins or so she is tired again. I try to stretch her wake window to 1.5 hours & then put her back to sleep

Hey, my DD is the same age and also wakes after 45 mins when napping. I think it’s fairly normal from speaking to friends etc some of their little ones are the same. I believe that it’s because their sleep cycles are this length and they sometimes find it hard to move into the next sleep cycle so they wake. Sometimes I manage to resettle her if I go to her around 45 mins in, and can put dummy back in and rock her pram/crib a little until she drifts back off. Other times she’s wide awake though Grin I do find she sleeps for longer in the pram during walks, would that be an option to try for one of your baby’s naps to see if she gets a longer sleep?

My DD was exactly the same until very recently. She’s now 6.5 and had a short nap and a couple of longer ones. Just let her get on with it unless it’s causing you an issue in other ways. I do find that my DD will sleep longer/fall back to sleep if she’s in the sling while I do other things

Normal. Mine only did exactly 30 minute naps until 6.5 months. Will now mostly sleep 2 x 1.5 hours in cot (with occasional 30 minute nap thrown in!)

Mine only started napping for longer when he started crawling at 9 months.

Very normal, a sleep cycle for babies is around 45 mins. My 5mo will often wake up around 45 mins and unless fed or rocked back to sleep will wake up for a full wake window.

Overnight the sleep cycles extend to 2 hours, which is why you get a longer stretch at nighttime (unless you're lucky and get an even longer stretch!).

We joked for about 6m that our LO only slept in 37 min spells in the day! Looking back at my app she absolutely did!
it gradually extended to an hour then an hour and a half and now at 2 she still has a 2 hour nap in the afternoon, after dropping her 2 hour morning nap about 15/18m. Very normal for your baby’s age don’t worry
