My 4 year old boy starts school this September and I know nothing about school shoes other than they're all black.
What's popular? Is their a new trend? The teacher advised parents to go for the strap over and no laces.

Feedback welcome Daffodil

Unless he's at a super strict state school or private school they tend to be quite relaxed about school shoes at that age so some all black trainers would probably do if he finds school shoes uncomfortable but if you want to go for proper school shoes head to Clarke or Wyndsors etc and there will benplenty of choice. Definitely dont get laces unless he can do them himself quickly.

Ds has always had the adidas superstar black trainer/school shoe. Started with the Velcro ones then moved on to laces. Always lasted well and the rubber toe cap is good. His school isn’t overly strict though. M&S do a good range along with Clark’s. Independent shoe shops are good if you have one. I have found with all my Dc that buying cheaper shoes doesn’t always work out as they haven’t lasted well and buy more frequently, might just be girls shoes though.

We got something like this for our son- bought a little big and lasted him the whole year.

Needs to be something leather and hardy with velcro as they do a lot of running around!

I don't think you need to worry about trendy at this age and I'd avoid anything too trainers like. Make sure you have name stickers inside both shoes as they will take them on and off frequently for things like sitting on the group mat/ reading mat/ PE and they will get confused!

I can confirm it is also an issue with cheap boys shoes! They go through them very quickly.
Clarks is brilliant for school shoes for your ds's age, they last and most of the kids that age wear them so you won't need to worry about him not being trendy.
If you do decide to go to Clark's, get there early as the queues this time of year for the fitters can be quite long!
