Views on JK aside, if you read your kids Harry Potter, what age did you feel they were ready for it? Why? How did it go?

My DD is obsessed with Harry Potter from the films. I have been reading her the books since last year so age 5/6. We are on book 5 now and she is away to turn 7. She is loving the books and they have made her even more obsessed with Ron.

We’ve read my nearly 7 year old the first two books. I think she isn’t ready for the rest of them.

I didn’t read them to mine, but they both read them all themselves at 7/8.

The first 3 are reasonably tame - I'd want my child to be over 10 to read the latter books. There is a lot of violence and more adult themes in them (yes, they would probably go over a younger child's head, but there are so many books you can read, I don't know why you'd choose these ones).

DD is nearly 6 but would definitely find the books too scary. We gave book 1 a go but had to abandon it.

I have a 7 year old were ploughing through book 2 currently

Common sense media suggests 8 for books 1 and 2, 9 for book 3, 10 for books 4 and 5, 11 for book 6 and 12 for book 7.

I read 1 to DS when he turned 9. About to read 2 at 9.5. DD started liking them at a similar age and ploughed through them pretty quickly, I.e. over a year or so. Other relatives read them earlier but I think 9/10 is about right to start personally.
